Chapter 8
Back to Normal
When Catie returned to Avalon, the twins were waiting to greet her at the dock.
âHi, Catie.â
âWhat are you girls doing here?â
âWeâve finished our paper, so weâre going home. Can we and Mummy get a ride with you when you go back to Earth?â
âOf course you can. But Iâm not leaving for a few weeks.â
âThatâs okay. Mummy still has some work to finish up.â
âI thought you guys might want to stay on Avalon,â Catie said.
âNo way! There arenât any young people here. Weâre going back to Delphi City, where all our friends are.â
âI guess that makes sense. We do need more young people on the starbases. We have to work on it, but itâs a chicken and egg thing.â
âWhat do chickens and eggs have to do with it?â
âWhat comes first, the chicken or the egg? We need young people on the starbase to attract more young people, so how do we ever get started?â
âOh, thatâs a weird saying, but we think youâre going to have to use money.â As usual, Catie could never tell which twin was which, and they kept finishing each otherâs sentences, so it was hopeless anyway.
âProbably. Well, Iâm heading to my cabin to get cleaned up. See you later.â
âYes, at the obstacle course? Right?!â
âSure. When do you want to go?â
âWhen can we get you to go?!â
âHow about 14:00.â
âWeâll reserve it; see you then.â
âIâve taken care of the reservations,â ADI informed everyone.
â â â
The twins quickly embarrassed Catie at the obstacle course, but that wasnât enough for them; they wanted to do it over and over.
âEnough!â Catie yelled. âYou guys go and chase each other.â
âHow are you ever going to get better if you donât practice?â
âOh, donât try that on me. I practice more than enough. You just like to embarrass me.â
âSure, but we like playing with you, too.â
âPlaying? Or toying?â
The Twins both put a finger to their lower lips as they thought. âBoth.â
âHa, at least you admit it.â
âCome on. If you do one more round, weâll buy you lunch.â
Catie hesitated a bit but then gave in. An hour later, they were at the restaurant ordering while the Twins recapped their humiliation of Catie.
âOkay, enough of that. What are you guys going to do when you get back to Delphi City?â
âWeâre going to go to Rarotonga to do some surfing.â
âWho with?â
âNot sure yet. Weâll invite a bunch of people and see who wants to go. Thatâs whatâs nice about Delphi City, you can always scare up a group of people to go have fun with.â
âYes, you told me. But what about Delphi Station?â
âSame problem as here, not enough young people. You can usually find one or two to do something with, but never eight or nine. Youâve got to figure out how to attract more kids.â
âWell, if you two would live there, then that would attract a lot of boys,â Catie said.
âHa, ha. We donât think so. We did open a holo suite up there. That helps with the entertainment once people are there, but you have to come up with a reason to pay young people to go there in the first place.
