Chapter 29

After leaving Leroy to unload his car and truck, Josh pulled into the driveway and helped Althea out of the car. Julia had seen them pull up, and opened the front door for them. She took one look at Althea’s bandaged wrist, told her to have a seat at the kitchen dinette table, and went about cleaning her wound with the help of young Nichole Thornton, who had turned out to be a natural nurse, eager to learn. Josh asked Julia about the other patients, as in addition to the wounded, two children had been brought in with food poisoning, probably from eating spoiled food. Julia said that Bill and his kids were taking turns looking in on them, changing bandages, and otherwise helping out.

Bill was there now and he came over and told Josh that it looked as if the sick and wounded remaining in the house might all recover, thanks to Julia’s expert treatment, the medical supplies they had gotten from the hospital, and the antibiotics they had recovered from the pharmacy. Bill told Josh he thought that he and his kids might just become permanent assistants to Julia, as it looked as if they would be having more patients as time went on.

Several other residents had already been by the aid station with minor ailments, and one parent had brought in a child with a fractured forearm, which Julia was able to splint and wrap. Josh agreed with Bill’s assessment, and said he hoped the arrangement worked out for them all.

Bill added one more thing. “Josh, we need to get a generator and some extension cords for lights. We have to check regularly on our patients, including during the night, and we are running low on flashlight batteries. Besides, sometimes we need more light than we can get from a small flashlight, especially if in the future we have casualties at night that need to be treated right away.”

“I’ll get on it and have a generator up here before dark. Can you get some long extension cords?”

“Yes, I have some at home, and we won’t need more than a couple of plug outlets bars, for several lights, so we won’t be putting much of a load on the generator. We’ll also be able to charge up rechargeable batteries while it’s running. If you could round us up all the rechargeable batteries with their chargers from the neighbors, we can use the generator very efficiently.”

“That’s good, Bill, but use it sparingly. I’ll get the generator we have in the picnic area’s storage room and be back here with it and some gas and oil in an hour or so.”
