Operation: Destruction

“Nano-operators are one of our greatest accomplishments, revolutionizing the fields of science, technology, medicine, and military development. Having diminutive machines capable of working in tandem to perform complex tasks, equipped with tools to bend and shape the very atomic structure of the elements has propelled our advancement as a species in unimaginable ways.”

Jason Scott, Ph.D. in “Mastering the Universe One Atom at a Time.”

Darrow’s troops began their forward march, lurching into motion as a cohesive whole. The map interface showed a green tide marching towards the city, wading through the mountainous environs. The Westan jungle was visible ahead and below, as the zone where Darrow’s ECO was set was located far above the sea level. The mountains didn’t extend far enough into the city to provide his Scorchers with vantage points, so he sent them together with the rest of his units. The vanguard was composed of five Tramplers and five squads of soldiers, and the rear was made of the same number. Darrow sent the remaining thirteen squads around the jungle, to flank the city, and he sent five squads into its eastern and western borders. The remaining three were sent on s southern approach. The Incursors remained on standby, as it was likely his enemy wasn’t aware of their existence and, as such, they offered a prime surprise factor, should air support be needed.

Upon reaching the jungle, the soldiers and Tramplers deployed quickly, the former following the trails made by the latter, as the tanks’ powerful legs easily flattened any plants that stood their way. Five kilometers northeast of the city, his troops dispersed, with the flankers moving deftly across the jungle, while the vanguard and rear stepped into position.

From his base, Darrow called upon a probe, intending to survey the city. The robot flew across the ocean and into the city in a matter of minutes, giving Darrow a full view of the place. The city was composed of three concentric rings with a large, solid mass in the center, surrounded by a large, cleared expanse. It wasn’t as heavily fortified as he had expected, and there seemed to be no traces of military presence. He still surveyed the land, however, trying to decipher the city’s defenses. The outermost rings were the most likely to be military in nature: fortifications erected around the circumference would make the city very difficult to flank. The probe’s sensors detected no equipment in the area – Darrow wasn’t surprised, as concealing one’s defenses was a solid tactic. Even if it was an assumption, thinking the ring was defended made the Master Commander rethink his strategy. He would still opt for a straightforward attack, except that the vanguard would be led by a couple of Tramplers. I have to test their railguns, anyway.

He rearranged his troops, sending forward two of the tanks, together with two Scorchers and two Chain gunners, as well as a Sturmer for fire support, in case it was necessary. Although the Tramplers were excellent for long-range and siege operations, they lacked close combat capabilities.
