TWELVE

Rick hurdled the last four stairs and blew out the door of the group home at a run.

Ginny’s body lay crumpled in the dirt.

His heart slammed into his ribs as he skidded to his knees. “Ginny, talk to me.” He stroked the hair from her face, and she let out a weak groan. He scanned the dumbfounded faces of his crew. “Tell me what happened! Somebody—”

“Dunno… I was inside… I didn’t see anything,” the men on his crew all mumbled at once.

Ginny curled into a ball. “Something fell…”

A hunk of two-by-four lay on the ground and one of his men pointed to an open second-story window. “It must’ve fallen from up there.”

Rick peered at the window and then his crew. “Where’s Vic? Who else is missing?”

“Vic’s out back,” Mike spoke up. “Loading the truck for a dump run.”

“Get him, then run upstairs. I want to know where everyone was when this happened.”

Ginny cupped the side of her head. “I don’t feel so good.”

Her broken voice shredded Rick’s insides. He needed to figure out who did this to her, but first he had to take care of her. He cradled her neck in his hands. “How’s your vision? Are you dizzy?”

“A little,” she admitted.

He helped her stand. “I’ll drive you to the doctor.”

“No, that’s not—” She swayed and he gathered her into his arms.

“If it’s all the same to you, I’d like a second opinion.”

She curled into his chest without another word of protest, and the sight of her trust—when all he’d cared about was grilling her for information—took his breath away.

Vic strutted around the corner carrying an armload of aluminum scraps. “You wanted to see me?”

“Where were you five minutes ago?”

Vic took one look at Ginny and jutted his thumb toward the back of the building. His armload clattered to the dirt. “Cleaning up.” His expression went blank, his tone neutral—the practiced defense of a criminal used to warding off accusations.

Mike ran out of the building. “No one’s up there, boss.”

Vic looked from Mike to Rick. “You looking for the kid in the hooded sweatshirt?”

The question exploded in Rick’s chest. Jones. It had to be. The realization deep-sixed any hope the incident was an accident.

“You want us to run out there and find the kid?” one of his burlier workers asked, making a show of punching his fists into his palms.

Rich shoved his feelings into a hard ball to deal with later. “Yeah,” he said, certain Laud’s salesman would be long gone. “If you find the guy, hang on to him and call me on my cell. I’m taking Ginny to the clinic.”

He had to warn her that someone was targeting her so she’d be on her guard. Never mind that he might be the one endangering her. He’d just blown any notion of fooling her stalker into believing he didn’t care for her.

An hour and a half later, Rick carried her into her home and laid her on the sofa. The fragrance of roses brought a smile to his lips.
