Chapter Twelve

After a few minutes there just watching the water and the clock tower tick time away, I turned to Logan. “You ready?”

He nodded, and after he stood, he held his hand out to help me up. His hand felt warm and inviting, and I didn’t let go after he helped me up. Neither did he. I marveled at the comfort of it all, as if we just naturally fit together.

Walking back toward the front of the shops, I noticed Gideon waiting outside the store. A chill ran down my spine as we get closer.

“Kassidy, just the person I was looking for,” he leered. He never looked like he had a genuine thought in his head. Gideon was basically the equivalent of the town mayor. Except, we didn’t have a mayor. He was the only government official we had, but having him as the head of the town council wasn’t something anyone really liked.

Except for those in his organization. Something like a cult or fraternal organization. They were quite the sketchy group. One I knew no one my age or younger would be part of, which had been frustrating him a lot in recent years. He wanted complete control of the island and everyone in it. He made my skin crawl.

“What can I do for you, Mr. McKenna? We’re closed right now.” I asked, squeezing Logan’s hand as if that will give me the strength to face whatever conversation Gideon was about to bring on.

“Yes, I’d heard about all that nastiness. That’s why I stopped by. I wanted to remind you that if you ever need to get out of your lease, I’d be glad to help. Can’t imagine you’d want to keep going after all of this. You know, I’ll pay generously.”

I gritted my teeth. The nerve he had to even suggest buying my shop. Just because of some break ins. I knew he didn’t want my shop so close to his and the pharmacy, but he also knew I’d never sell. And, the girls would never sell to him, no matter the amount of money he promised.

“First of all, no. I told you last year I would never be selling to you. So did Nehemiah and Ruth, and the girls would agree. We aren’t selling to you. Second, I’m not letting a few break ins destroy me. Got that?”

“It seems you’re not ready. I see that. But, don’t make a foolish mistake. I know this is costing you greatly, and I know you’ve already been struggling to stay afloat. You will need my deal in time. I’ll be here when you do.”

He gave a decisive nod of his head and turned to go back to the general store. I couldn’t even speak. I felt the heat rise in me as my anger grew.

“Wow, what a jerk,” Logan muttered next to me, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze.

“Honestly, he’s the worst. He’s really upset he can’t get my shop. He already owns the pharmacy and the general store. I think he just wants to expand.
