Chapter Ten
Roxy couldn’t breathe with Wade this near. “I, I was…”
“Going to get your hair done up?” he said, his voice a whisper.
Done up? She smiled and almost leaned back against his chest, the instinct so natural she didn’t know where it came from. This man was definitely a throwback to another era in some ways—his old school manners, his uptight morals, his shy sexuality—and that combination seemed to be working a number on her. The dipping temperature kissed her cheeks with icy lips, but she barely noticed with the heat generated by Wade being so close.
Her gaze fell to the storefront, to what she could see inside Trula’s Trendy Tresses. What was Wade doing here? Not for a haircut. Although a lot of Seattle men patronized a salon like Jean-Louis’s. In Kalispell, a man’s man used a barbershop or he ran the risk of being cattle-prodded out of town by his buddies. Except Quint, of course. Callee trimmed his hair, and he liked it over the collar.
Roxy found some solid footing and turned to face Wade, her lady parts dancing at the sight and smell of him. She ignored the party her body wanted to have with Wade, kept her expression as bland as she could manage, and answered his question about having her hair done up. “I was thinking about it.”
“Looked to me like you were retreating.”
“What brings you here?” She eyed his hair. Short and neat. No trim required. Could she hope he was headed to the florist for an “I’m sorry I haven’t been in touch since almost making love to you last week” bouquet?
He cleared his throat and glanced at his boots, tugging on the brim of the Stetson. When he lifted his face to hers, he looked perplexed and unsure, like a man stepping through a field of mines, not knowing when or if he would land on a live one. Of all the scenarios that might explain his dilemma—all relating to her, of course—she didn’t expect the one that came out of his mouth. “Emily’s over there, in my truck. She’s turning thirteen on New Year’s Eve, and she wants to get her hair done up in a new style. Andrea recommended I bring her here, but now she’s chickening out. Making up silly excuses not to go in. I think she’s afraid they might laugh at her.”
Roxy felt a sudden deep kinship with Emily. Hairdressers had no idea how intimidating they could be. Despite their expertise, their vision of a woman’s hair might not match the one inside the client’s head. The end result could be an epic victory or a major fail—that the customer would have to live with for weeks. She shuddered. “I totally understand.”
Wade glanced toward the shop, his mouth scrunched in indecision. “I thought I’d go in and see if they have a brochure or something that Emily could take home to look over.”
Roxy smiled at the possibility that he might also end up with a handful of the flyers that were in the window.
