Trula’s Trendy Tresses sat in a strip mall near the Wal-Mart, two doors down from The Flower Garden, Betty and Dean Gardener’s floral shop. Callee had told Roxy the story of the senior couple who had been lovers in their teens, but their parents had objected and separated them. Most of their lives were spent apart, but recently they’d found each other again, discovered they had never stopped being in love, finally married, and held a big reception last month, serving pie instead of cake at the celebration.
Roxy had no such delusion that she and Ty would find each other again in their senior years and remarry. They shouldn’t have married in the first place, she realized more every day. Love, phooey. It was for everyone but her. The thought gave her pause. Was she getting grumpier by the day? She swore she was. In fact, her mind spent more time thinking about sex lately than anything else, but not sex with anyone. Sex with one tall, shy, maddening cowboy contractor.
Maybe getting her hair cut would lift her spirits. But as she gazed at the shop, a wayward sorrow swept through her for her Seattle hairdresser, Jean-Louis. His downtown salon made you feel like you were stepping into a Parisian spa on the Left Bank: very high-end, very expensive, but he was a perfectionist. Well worth what he charged to keep her unruly mop manageable.
But you’re not in Emerald City anymore, Dorothy. Establishing a core of service people in the town where she lived was essential to her survival here. She had to do this. It ought to be simple enough to follow the lines of Jean-Louis’ haircut. And yet, trepidation filled her stomach as she caught a glimpse of the interior paint that looked even darker than the purple slopped on the outside façade. She couldn’t be sure, though, given the windows were plastered with flyers about local causes or events, some of them a year old.
She meant to take a step forward, but actually backed up a step. Maybe two. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. She took another couple of backward steps and slammed into something solid that hadn’t been there before. A man. A very tall man. He caught her arms, steadying her on the slippery pavement.
“This could be a replay of the night we met.”
Wade. His breath fanned her ear, and her heart almost exploded in her chest. She couldn’t move. Didn’t want him to move. Even though they were standing in a parking lot just off a very public highway, even though this could start a whole new round of gossip.
