Chapter 9

Nyada and Dee

A few diamonds had bought Aw Shucks a one hundred acre ranch, which came complete, with a large mansion, a barn, various farm animals, and farming equipment. Nyada spent a lot of his time there. Aw Shucks lived alone except when he bought an occasional girlfriend home for a short stay. After his father ‘s death, the spacecraft became a lonely place for Nyada and he used it mainly for the purposes of studying the stars and sciences. With Aw Shucks’ help Nyada was able to have use of all the material things he might desire without risking his anonymity. He had cars, clothes, money and a place to stay whenever he wished. On the ranch he could also exercise his physical prowess. He could make sport of out running galloping horses. He could pull a large tree trunk out of the ground with his bare hands and plow a large field in a day using only hand tools. Squirrels and deer were helpless trying to escape him if he gave chase. But most of all and best of all, he and Aw Shucks could play their guitars as long as they wanted.

“Guard you heart. Strengthen it against the sorrow. Be happy while you may. Always remember why you do what you do. Always be safe. Always be sure. Always love. Always be a man. “

That is what Nyada’s father told him concerning mating and he absorbed every word. He would always be a man. He would be safe and sure. And loving would be easy except that at the same time he had to guard his heart. He was not definite on how these two seemingly opposing things could be done, but he was sure that he would find a way.

Nyada’s problem concerning mating, was that he still had to remain unknown while having children who remained unknown. He could not have a mate who wished to live as the rest of the humans on earth did. He needed a mate that would be satisfied to have his child and live out her days in secrecy. Nyada had to find a mate that could only gain by having his child and would be content.

When he first saw Dee his heart was moved to pity her. She lay asleep in her bed clinging to her little bit of life left, reminding him of his fathers’ last days. Her head was hairless and she wore a scarf, even when she was alone, to cover it up. She could not have been any thinner. Nyada could offer her what his father had offered his mother. He only needed her to accept his proposal.

Deidra Michaels was trying to sleep and shut out the pain when her Loverman first came to see her. She at first thought that she was having a dream when he spoke to her. A real nice dream. She lay on her side. Her eyes were closed and she felt someone caressing her head. When Deidra opened her eyes, she saw in front of her the most beautiful man, or boy, she had ever seen.
