CHAPTER 8

The United States of America, the Mojave Desert, February 25th, 2017.

"How long until his return," asked Sabb.

Lenin looked at his watch. "Less than a minute."

"He'll be back, don't worry," said Kennedy.

"How can I not worry? We've sent a man on a suicide mission."

"Sabb, my friend. How many times do I have to repeat, he is Nikola Tesla?"

But Kennedy's words of encouragement didn't break through to him.

"I know, but I'm getting nervous. How much more, Lenin?" Sabb grew even more nervous.

"Well, just about now."

Tesla materialized at the thirty-meter distance from them.

"He's back!"

"What have I been telling you all along, Sabb?" Kennedy smiled.

They ran towards him.

"Are you all right, Nikola?"

"I am, and I am not, Sabb. You have no idea how good it is to see you."

"And?" asked Kennedy. "What's the situation?"

"I saw them."

"What are they like?"

"They are physically identical to humans from our side of the Universe. We were wrong regarding the desert. They've made a city there, called Las Vegas. I materialized in a casino called Blackjack. Gambling is legal in their Universe."

"Damn it! They saw you."

"Actually, Lenin, they didn't. Nobody paid any attention to me. They were so occupied by gambling that no one noticed my arrival."

"Did you manage to find out something regarding the spaceship?" asked Kennedy.

"Unfortunately, yes. First of all, I got to tell you their technology is much more primitive than ours. They are approximately three hundred years behind us, if not even more. They've just discovered the Global Data Network."

"Have you found information about our doppelgangers?" Lenin had prepared this question for later, but couldn't hold it back.

"Yes, Mr. Lenin. Your doppelganger was one of the most significant historical figures of the 20th century, a founder of a state that was called Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. There are only two states in our Universe, Europe and USA, but in their Universe, there are numerous states spread across what their seven continents—Asia, Africa, Antarctica, Europe, North America, South America, and Australia. Can you imagine if the USA's territory consisted of only a part of the North American continent? Also, Berlin is located in one of the European states called Germany. One of the largest states in their universe is called the Russian Federation (formerly the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) which stretches through parts of the European and Asian continent, and Lenin was one of their most accomplished leaders. I stress past tense because he is not alive anymore. He was born in the 19th century and died in 1924."

"So he was a great man?" Lenin's face lit with pride.

"Well, it depends on how you take it. He is actually a very controversial figure. Some perceive him as a fighter for the wellbeing of mankind and worker's rights, while others see him as a dictator responsible for mass breaches in human rights and causing a civil war. He advocated complete social equality, but through revolutionary violence. His political ideology is called communism, but it was so radical it is at the very top of most violent ideologies according to the number of executed people.
