26. THE ENTRANCEMENT

Mara enjoyed the delicate delight of the swift slice of the Starwalker’s throat. Her neck had been smooth and unwrinkled, but she was a mature woman, with a curvaceous, lovely figure that fell fast and spurted a jet of blood as she slammed against the rooftop. She would never again see another star, not in the night sky, or through one of her fantastic leaps of magic across the universe. The thought saddened Mara for some reason.

Would Caisa teach her the art of traveling the stars? Mara rather liked her journey to Vellia with Talis, and missed their adventures. When she had fallen into the crowd of the possessed and slammed onto the ground, a strange kind of clarity had overtaken her mind. An instinct to survive had come over her, and throughout her furious battle against the throng, she witnessed Talis aiding her from the air, casting spell after spell that had undoubtedly kept her alive. Otherwise she’d have found herself an unwilling participant in the dance of death deep within the bowls of the Underworld.

She still heard the commands of Caisa in her mind, still possessed a strong link to the Nameless, but Mara’s willpower had returned, as did her instinct for self-preservation. The fall had knocked her back to her senses. There was no way she’d ever act so blindly again, and the power of the daggers was her key to shield her mind. She’d discovered the secret: link the Nameless in her mind as the one being who desired to separate her from the daggers, and the daggers did the rest, blocking any unwanted influence.

So far the strategy had worked without warning Caisa. Mara regained her senses and acted with prudence instead of blindly rushing out without concern for her own safety. The Nameless didn’t care if she lived or died. Mara knew everyone and everything was expendable in the mind of madness, a mind she refused to remain a prisoner to.

A rumbling noise from behind rose stronger and louder until Mara’s curiosity could no longer be contained. She retrieved the fragment from the Starwalker’s alabaster hand and took several leaps across rooftops to take a closer look. There it was again, from the upper part of Naru, a cataclysmic sound as if the very earth were being rent open. She glanced around, hoping to spy Aurellia or Caisa, but the only evidence of their mischief was the streaking Starwalkers far off to the south. The sounds from the upper part of Naru were not coming from them.

Her curiosity growing, Mara took several more fantastic leaps, the last one vaulting over the upper walls to the area where the Temple of the Order stood. This can’t be happening, Goddess Nestria, tell me this isn’t real. From the place where the Temple once existed, a gaping maw of blackness expanded, engulfing the buildings and people surrounding it.

A belching, barking sound issued forth from the abyss and a sulfuric stench like the smell of a thousand rotten eggs tainted the pure air of Naru.
