Kate

One Year Later

“Oh, sweetheart,” Mom said, as she walked towards me with my ivory silk veil with the lace border. “You look stunning.”

“Mom,” I said to her, in surprise. “Are you crying already?”

Mom laughed and wiped away the tear on her cheek. “You’re just the picture-perfect bride.”

I turned back to the full-length mirror I was standing in front of. My dress was simple. It was an off the shoulder A-line style made of soft crepe silk. The edges of the sleeves and the hem of the skirt alone were worked with tiny seed pearls. Around my waist, there was a thin black ribbon that gave my dress some edge, and my heels were an off-white strappy pair with a thick heel so that I would be able to walk and dance comfortably.

I had decided to wear my hair up for the ceremony. It had been fashioned into a knot at the back of my head with little wisps of my hair kept loose and hanging around my head for that chic and messy look. I had silver-white studded hairclips that held my knot in place, and Mom was using two more to fasten my veil as well. I had kept my makeup simple. I had applied neutral skin tones as the foundation and added on mascara and eyeliner to highlight my eyes. My eyes were Anthony’s favorite feature, and I wanted to make sure he noticed them. I stared at my reflection in the mirror, and I felt truly content. Some days it felt like I had been planning this wedding non-stop for six months since Anthony had proposed, and other days it felt like only yesterday.

But now that it was finally here, I realized I was less excited for the actual ceremony and more excited about the part that followed it. We had our month-long honeymoon in Europe to look forward to, and then a lifetime together, which meant a lifetime of adventures with the man I adored.

Mom stepped into the frame of the mirror so that I could see both of us in the reflection. She had arrived in Hollis a week ago so that she could help me with the last minute planning for the wedding and having her here had been true blessing. She and Anthony had developed a close relationship over the course of the year, even before we had gotten engaged. It was one that was based on give and take, which was why it worked best. Anthony now came with me to church every Sunday and he allowed Mom to teach him about her faith, while he broadened her perspective a little, and consequently her mind.

“Are you ready, darling?” she asked.

“Yes.” I nodded. “I am.”

Mom stepped behind me and fastened the veil on my head. She had just finished when Annie walked in. She looked lovely in a beautiful powder-blue wrap dress. I had asked her to be my maid of honor the day after Anthony had proposed and she had practically jumped on me because she was so excited.
