Chapter Nine

“Answer, answer, answer,” Kutter chanted as he waited for his sister to pick up the phone. Now was not the time for her to be too busy to take his call.

“Hey, Kutter. Didn’t I just talk to you earlier this morning?” Brenda asked. He could hear noises in the background, sounding like she was outside, probably in the barn.

“You did, but that was before everyone ganged up on me and informed me I needed to make a grand gesture of apology to Halston or spend forever as the jerk who ruined her life.”

“Oh. That again?” Brenda sounded distracted.

“Wrong reply, sis. I’m keeping this short and sweet. I took Halston flowers, she loved them, and now I have a date with her that begins in forty minutes. Suggestions?”

“What? You have a date with her? I thought you said you didn’t like her. I thought —”

Kutter interrupted her. “Never mind what you think I thought. I like her, Bren. She’s smart and funny, driven but kind. She is an excellent baker, sings like you wouldn’t believe, and she’s not too hard to look at.”

Brenda laughed. “And now the truth comes out. I already looked her up online, little brother. She’s a red-headed bombshell. Who are you trying to kid?”

Kutter grinned. “She is beautiful, sis. I feel like I have one shot at getting her to go out with me, and I don’t want to mess it up. Where should I take her?”

“Go for a drive out in the … I just remembered you don’t have your pickup there, only the livestock truck. Do something Christmassy with her. Like a holiday movie, or take her to see decorations. Maybe some kind of food tasting. Don’t they have those all over down there? If she hasn’t been there before, show her some of your favorite things about Las Vegas. Just don’t take her to a cowboy vendor show to hang out with your friends. This needs to be something with just the two of you.”

“Okay. Got it. Thank you, Brenda. I really do appreciate you.”

“Anytime, little brother. Gotta run, but keep me posted. I want to hear how your date went.”

“Sure, Brenda. Love you.”

“Love you too.”

Kutter disconnected the call, turned on his laptop, and scrolled through a list of touristy things to do in Las Vegas. He looked up ideas for dates and discarded the suggestions as fast as he read them.

Rather than get all wrapped up in creating some magical moment in time, he decided to go for a walk with Halston and see where it took them.

He hurried down to the lobby, got one of the maps of The Strip along with a booklet that had information about each casino, then took a seat facing the elevators so he could watch for Halston. When she stepped off fifteen minutes later, he decided it was worth the wait.

The dark green dress she wore set off the deep red hue of her hair. She carried a leather jacket tossed over her arm and wore sensible sneakers that were perfect for walking.
