Nine

The week flew by for Leslie, the high points being her three meetings with Blaine. Saturday, she’d spent hours helping him sort and price those items he’d chosen to put aside for the tag sale. Clothing and other basic necessities, he’d put in cardboard boxes to drop off as donations to a charitable organization; she’d driven him there since his car was still in the shop, needing more work. Then on Sunday, she’d been surprised and pleased when he’d slid into her pew at the white-steepled community church they both attended. Afterward, they grabbed a bite to eat at a local restaurant—nice, but nothing quite like the surprise Leslie received when he had taken her to an Italian restaurant after they visited the covered bridges and she discovered they shared a passion for Italian food. He’d surprised her by again showing up on Tuesday and taking her and her grandmother on another river outing, this time in a rowboat. While they’d waited for Nana to change clothes, Leslie discreetly left another batch of letters on the table for her grandmother to read later, then showed Blaine the garden.

Now Leslie sat in her cubicle, sorting through the latest letters Mr. Abernathy had given her. Since receiving the two mailbags, thankfully the inflow had died down considerably, and Leslie attributed the previous popularity boost to the weeks-old news report of the lady and the carjacker that had aired statewide. She still received mail every day and hadn’t yet sifted through all the envelopes of the second bag, but it wasn’t anything she couldn’t handle.

“What’s this mean?” she murmured as she saw a familiar, long, white security envelope.

“Something wrong?” Carly wheeled out from her cubicle, leaning back in her rolling chair to look at Leslie.

“Hm? Oh, no. Just someone I’d written to.” Mr. Abernathy’s final inclusion hadn’t included Desperate’s question or Leslie’s answer to the reader in the Goosebury Gazette, so unknown to her boss, she’d written to the post office box with a private reply. She just couldn’t ignore Desperate’s pain and had wanted to do what she could to help. Often, since visiting Mendleton, she wondered if that woman could have been Sharon Lester.

She sliced open the envelope and withdrew a single page of notebook paper. As she read, her heart dove bottomward.

“Bad news?” Carly asked.

The letter strongly threatened suicide.

Leslie folded the page and looked at the clock on the wall, glad to see it was almost quitting time. She reached for her purse. “I need to leave early. There’s someone I have to find. If Mr. Abernathy wants me, tell him I’ll have the copy on his desk tomorrow.”

“Wait a minute. This sounds as if it could be interesting. Just who are you rushing off to meet so fast?” Carly arched her dark eyebrows. “Blaine?”

“Why would you think that?”

“Oh, come on, Leslie. You’re always together. Who else could it be?”

Leslie shrugged, uncomfortable with Carly’s intent stare. She wasn’t yet ready to confide in anyone—especially since if Mr. Abernathy caught wind of her plan, she could be in danger of losing her job.
