The week flew by for Leslie, the high points being her three meetings with Blaine. Saturday, sheâd spent hours helping him sort and price those items heâd chosen to put aside for the tag sale. Clothing and other basic necessities, heâd put in cardboard boxes to drop off as donations to a charitable organization; sheâd driven him there since his car was still in the shop, needing more work. Then on Sunday, sheâd been surprised and pleased when heâd slid into her pew at the white-steepled community church they both attended. Afterward, they grabbed a bite to eat at a local restaurantânice, but nothing quite like the surprise Leslie received when he had taken her to an Italian restaurant after they visited the covered bridges and she discovered they shared a passion for Italian food. Heâd surprised her by again showing up on Tuesday and taking her and her grandmother on another river outing, this time in a rowboat. While theyâd waited for Nana to change clothes, Leslie discreetly left another batch of letters on the table for her grandmother to read later, then showed Blaine the garden.
Now Leslie sat in her cubicle, sorting through the latest letters Mr. Abernathy had given her. Since receiving the two mailbags, thankfully the inflow had died down considerably, and Leslie attributed the previous popularity boost to the weeks-old news report of the lady and the carjacker that had aired statewide. She still received mail every day and hadnât yet sifted through all the envelopes of the second bag, but it wasnât anything she couldnât handle.
âWhatâs this mean?â she murmured as she saw a familiar, long, white security envelope.
âSomething wrong?â Carly wheeled out from her cubicle, leaning back in her rolling chair to look at Leslie.
âHm? Oh, no. Just someone Iâd written to.â Mr. Abernathyâs final inclusion hadnât included Desperateâs question or Leslieâs answer to the reader in the Goosebury Gazette, so unknown to her boss, sheâd written to the post office box with a private reply. She just couldnât ignore Desperateâs pain and had wanted to do what she could to help. Often, since visiting Mendleton, she wondered if that woman could have been Sharon Lester.
She sliced open the envelope and withdrew a single page of notebook paper. As she read, her heart dove bottomward.
âBad news?â Carly asked.
The letter strongly threatened suicide.
Leslie folded the page and looked at the clock on the wall, glad to see it was almost quitting time. She reached for her purse. âI need to leave early. Thereâs someone I have to find. If Mr. Abernathy wants me, tell him Iâll have the copy on his desk tomorrow.â
âWait a minute. This sounds as if it could be interesting. Just who are you rushing off to meet so fast?â Carly arched her dark eyebrows. âBlaine?â
âWhy would you think that?â
âOh, come on, Leslie. Youâre always together. Who else could it be?â
Leslie shrugged, uncomfortable with Carlyâs intent stare. She wasnât yet ready to confide in anyoneâespecially since if Mr. Abernathy caught wind of her plan, she could be in danger of losing her job.
