“So Sadie Lawson is using Trevor Haskell.” In the parking lot, Phillip leaned against Hannah’s SUV and stared at the front of the prison. Bright sunlight reflected off the windshield, making it hard to look directly at him. “Why?”

Hannah looked away and scanned the area. They’d parked far enough from other cars so that they could talk freely, but she still wanted to make sure no one was listening. It was likely safer to confer here than at Gabe’s. There was no way to know for sure if his house had been bugged.

She’d have Thalia do a sweep when they got back. For now, they needed to sort out the truckload of information that Trevor had dumped on them.

Gabe squinted against the sunlight. There was no shade in the prison parking lot. “Once again, someone brought up my software.”

“Let’s start there.” Thalia was sitting on the hood of her car with her hands braced on either side of her hips, watching Gabe. “What’s the deal with this program?”

Gabe looked to Hannah as though waiting for her to respond, but the story was his to tell. When it was clear she wasn’t going to talk, he stepped closer to the three agents. “The short version?”

Phillip looked up from tugging at something on the sleeve of his jacket. “Unless you’re offering popcorn, let’s keep it under a minute. We missed lunch.”

It looked like Gabe almost smiled, but it might have been a trick of the midday sunlight. “Short version is that I profile people based on their behavior in real life, but I also analyze online behavior. With my grad school mentor, I developed a program that would do the online work for me. Feed it their social media, their online purchases, their browser history and other bits of data. It builds a profile that can then be melded with in-person evals, if there are any. It has the ability to remote into a computer as well, so if you had a warrant and couldn’t get physical hands on a person’s phone or laptop, then—”

“Then your program could hack in and mine the necessary data.” Thalia leaned forward, clearly intrigued.

“And that’s how my software discovered that Trevor was blackmailing a senator.”

The pain in Gabe’s expression was so raw, Hannah wanted to close the couple of feet between them and take his hand. Seeing Trevor hadn’t been easy for him. It had to have reopened wounds. Realizing that Trevor knew his role was something Gabe would have to process and work through.

Both men seemed to know everything except Hannah’s past role as an undercover agent. That would have to remain a secret, particularly now that NJN had taken on Trevor’s case.

She forced herself to look away from Gabe. Once he found out she’d used him back then...

“It takes a lot of fortitude to turn your best friend over to the FBI. That wasn’t easy.” Phillip broke the silence. There was new respect in his gaze as he tipped his head toward Gabe.

Gabe looked away.
