âSo Sadie Lawson is using Trevor Haskell.â In the parking lot, Phillip leaned against Hannahâs SUV and stared at the front of the prison. Bright sunlight reflected off the windshield, making it hard to look directly at him. âWhy?â
Hannah looked away and scanned the area. Theyâd parked far enough from other cars so that they could talk freely, but she still wanted to make sure no one was listening. It was likely safer to confer here than at Gabeâs. There was no way to know for sure if his house had been bugged.
Sheâd have Thalia do a sweep when they got back. For now, they needed to sort out the truckload of information that Trevor had dumped on them.
Gabe squinted against the sunlight. There was no shade in the prison parking lot. âOnce again, someone brought up my software.â
âLetâs start there.â Thalia was sitting on the hood of her car with her hands braced on either side of her hips, watching Gabe. âWhatâs the deal with this program?â
Gabe looked to Hannah as though waiting for her to respond, but the story was his to tell. When it was clear she wasnât going to talk, he stepped closer to the three agents. âThe short version?â
Phillip looked up from tugging at something on the sleeve of his jacket. âUnless youâre offering popcorn, letâs keep it under a minute. We missed lunch.â
It looked like Gabe almost smiled, but it might have been a trick of the midday sunlight. âShort version is that I profile people based on their behavior in real life, but I also analyze online behavior. With my grad school mentor, I developed a program that would do the online work for me. Feed it their social media, their online purchases, their browser history and other bits of data. It builds a profile that can then be melded with in-person evals, if there are any. It has the ability to remote into a computer as well, so if you had a warrant and couldnât get physical hands on a personâs phone or laptop, thenââ
âThen your program could hack in and mine the necessary data.â Thalia leaned forward, clearly intrigued.
âAnd thatâs how my software discovered that Trevor was blackmailing a senator.â
The pain in Gabeâs expression was so raw, Hannah wanted to close the couple of feet between them and take his hand. Seeing Trevor hadnât been easy for him. It had to have reopened wounds. Realizing that Trevor knew his role was something Gabe would have to process and work through.
Both men seemed to know everything except Hannahâs past role as an undercover agent. That would have to remain a secret, particularly now that NJN had taken on Trevorâs case.
She forced herself to look away from Gabe. Once he found out sheâd used him back then...
âIt takes a lot of fortitude to turn your best friend over to the FBI. That wasnât easy.â Phillip broke the silence. There was new respect in his gaze as he tipped his head toward Gabe.
Gabe looked away.
