“For God’s sake, man, quit going ‘round your ass to get to your elbow. Just spit it out.”

“Pops! Biters, coming right quick!” Syd bellowed from inside the tree line. He fired two rounds and came running to join us.

I threw my pack on and shucked a shell. Joe was already at my side, teeth bared.

“Go, we’ll cover you,” I told the old man. He and his sons looked like they could take care of themselves, but they had a pregnant woman with them. This world needed babies, and people to raise them.

He shook my hand. “Thanks. We know a safe path that’ll take us back to our camp. God bless, and remember, avoid the interstate.” They took off towards a small hill and disappeared behind an outcropping of large pine trees. Three zombies sauntered out of the woods a few seconds later, fresh blood staining their clothing. Jenny took one out with a flechette burst. Joe had another by the neck, which left one for me. I subscribed to the philosophy of avoiding strenuous exercise after a meal, so I took a chunk off of its shoulder with Big Betty. Even from thirty yards away, the shot had enough force to knock the zombie off its feet. Jenny walked over to it and finished the job with a point blank shot to the head. She was getting acclimated to life outside of the Rivet City walls quickly.

I looked around for Grif and his family, but there was no longer any sign of them. I replayed his warning in my head. I knew the interstates were dangerous, but if we cut across the forest to skirt the interstate, it might take us weeks to get to Westport. That was if we made it out at all. We gathered our things and continued our trek to the find the camper.

A thick fog moved in, making travel difficult. We should have reached the camper half an hour ago, but Jenny had a hard time finding landmarks in the poor visibility. I was looking around for a safe spot to camp and wait for the fog to clear when I felt a pair of jaws clamp onto my right leg, just above the ankle. If I didn’t scream, it was because the pain was so intense that it sucked the air out of my lungs. Before I knew it, I was on my back and clutching at my leg. Jenny pried the rusty bear trap open, pulling the jaws out of my leg. She cried out herself when she cut her finger on a sharp tooth. My leg throbbed and pulsed, the nerve endings screaming in agony. A lot of blood poured out of the wound, and that couldn’t be good. Jenny looked scared, and that was also not good.

“Jeremiah, this is bad. I don’t think your leg is broken, but the metal is rusty and it cut deep, right to the bone. I’m going to have to suture the wound right fucking now.”

If she was resorting to swearing, that meant I was probably dead.
