Chapter 11 – Corvani

Cartas had his orders, and for once, he would listen to them. He stumbled into the wooden hut, sporting several more bruises upon his face – most of which were masked by his long messy brown hair. Forgat stood tall behind the small wooden table, as Cartas knelt humbly before him.

‘Erval demands Ita’s death. He wants you to carry that out,’ Forgat declared in a commanding voice, turning away with shame at such an order. This drew Cartas’ attention instantly, who snapped his bowed head upwards.

‘That goes against everything Erval believes in, our political system,’ Cartas questioned in disbelief. Forgat gave a small nod to this.

‘That is why I am asking you to do otherwise.’

‘What?’ Cartas spluttered, taken aback by Forgat’s apparent lack of loyalty.

‘My loyalty,’ Forgat declared sternly, ‘is to the tribe, not Erval. You are to capture Ita alive and bring him to me. From there I can persuade him to resign.’

‘How would you do that?’

‘I have information on him he would not wish to come to light.’

‘Surely,’ Cartas pressed, frowning with confusion, ‘killing him would work too?’

‘I will not condemn a man who would save this nation to execution,’ Forgat snapped in frustration. ‘Such action breeds negative results, and I will not be party to this transgression.’ Cartas did not reply. ‘You are to take him tonight and bring him to me. Seven of Erval’s men will aid you.’

‘As you wish.’

Ita paced down the dusty street. His guards had all but disappeared, just as he noticed that several men tailed him through the murky black darkness. He sped towards his home, where his supporters would surely be on watch, yet Ita was no fool, for he knew the chances of reaching it were small. He stopped. He stood still. Blocking his path stood Cartas, along with two of Erval’s men. Cartas’ broad figure covered the moonlight with an enormous shadow. Seeing this, Ita rapidly turned down a nearby alleyway, moving into sprint, his dark hair trailing behind him. Once more, he stopped, for this path too was blocked, and he was taken from both sides now. Subtly, he looked over his shoulder.

‘Are you going to kill me?’ he pressed Cartas, turning to face him with confidence. ‘I didn’t think Erval had it in him.’ Cartas paused for a few seconds and held out a small sack.

‘Bag him,’ he ordered, causing the soldiers on either side of him to advance forward. ‘Do not resist. We don’t want to kill you.’

‘Don’t resist?’ Ita laughed with disbelief, pulling out a short, smooth knife. ‘You’re trying to kidnap me, and you want me to not resist.’ Cartas nodded at his men who looked back at him for reassurance. Slowly, they moved in, bags dangling by their sides. Ita pointed his knife forward with confidence, holding it at arm’s length to keep the aggressors at bay. Cartas nodded to two more men who also moved in, yet once again they seemed unable to penetrate Ita’s defences.

‘We outnumber him. Someone disarm him.
