A part of me wishes we were back in the sewer system instead of exposed out here in the open like a raw nerve. Granted, having the infected festering below wasnât expected by anyone. Just a little while longer in the cityâs waste is all one could ask. Did I just think that?
Stone was right about the Warlocks and their ever-vigilant gaze upon the streets. Heâs been able to point out snipers on the rooftops and street sweepers passing through. There are lots of dead infected spread all over the place. These people donât mess around.
Iâm not exactly sure how he knows so much about their movements and habits, making me think heâs spent some time with the crude group of bandits in some way or another. For his sake, I hope heâs not playing both sides.
Iâm unsure of how weâre going to get in now. Itâs starting to feel like mission impossible. I guess either way, it doesnât really matter. Even if I have to knock down the Warlocks front door and walk my happy ass on in, Iâll do whatâs necessary to get it done.
The alleyways have been congested with trash and miscellaneous junk. Portions have been completely blocked off, making it more challenging to maneuver.
Something stirs above us on the building to our right. Stone throws up his hand and makes a fist, signaling for everyone to stop. After a few seconds of looking upward, he waves his hands at us and whispers, âFind cover.â
Like rats scattering from a light, we spread out and hide. T and I take cover in the back of a U-Haul truck while Stone and Rodriguez split. We quickly lose sight of them.
âYou see anything?â T asks.
With my back to the metal ribs of the trucks interior, I cautiously lean toward the edge and peer up. âNope, but that doesnât mean there isnât anyone up there.â
âStone, man, Iâll tell you what, heâs got some uncanny ass hearing. Home boy can pick up two roaches having sex a mile away seems like,â T jokingly says.
âYeah. Stoneâs pretty interesting to say the least. Speaking of his sixth senses, how does he know so much about the Warlocksâ habits? Movements? His insight feels a little too good to be true here.â
âAt one time, Stone was part of the Warlocks. He was an infiltrator for the group. Heâd go out and find other groups, earn their trust, and then report back what they have and their numbers. Dude is crazy smooth and can really turn on the charm when need be.â
âHow did he end up with you all? Jesse doesnât really like strangers too much, or it could just be me.â Mike shrugs his shoulders.
âStone ended up saving Jesseâs life and finally came clean with what he was up to. Generally, Jesse wouldnât bat an eye at disposing of a person who has such ill intent, but the two of them found they had more in common than they realized. Stone ultimately wanted out of the Warlocks, so he defected and Jesse allowed him to stay.
