Twenty-Seven
Two hours later, Maggie heads to the arena for the finals of the rodeo. Hank hasnât shown up, called, or texted. Sheâs not going to miss seeing what she came forâthe Double S stock in all their glory. But with Hankâs latest explosion, Travisâs words are haunting her.
Gene shouts over a line of people at the gate. âMaggie, wait up.â
She waves and does.
âHave you seen Hank?â he asks.
âNot since he almost beat a guyâs ass for flirting with me.â
âShit. Then heâs probably half a bottle of whiskey down at a trailer somewhere out there, with an old-timer who doesnât realize he needs to send him on his way.â
Maggie pulls Gene out of line, away from all the ears. âWhatâs with him, Gene? Is he always like this? Heâs scaring me.â
Gene sighs. âWhich question do you want me to answer first?â
âJust tell me whatâs going on.â
âLetâs walk.â They head inside the arena, where the sounds of the âStar-Spangled Bannerâ begin and swell as the crowd sings along. He raises his voice in her ear to be heard over the music. âOkay, first, heâs not always like this.â
Maggie exhales, loudly. âThank God.â
âHe is occasionally.â
âI liked your first answer better.â
âYou know about his brain injury? GodâI hope you do, or Iâll catch hell for spilling it.â
âI do.â Maggie shows her contractor badge to the attendant at the entrance, as does Gene.
âGood. From time to time, he needs adjustments. The headaches start again. Mood swings. Loss of control.â
They head up a ramp toward the box with their reserved seats.
âBut the adjustments work?â
âThey always have before.â
Maggie balls her fists. âSo he needs to see his doctor.â
âThatâs the challenge.â
âWhy?â
âBy the time he needs it, heâs less rational.â
âTell me about it.â
The two of them swim upstream against traffic in the corridor, weaving around clusters of people like salmon in a river full of boulders. Their box is on the exact opposite side of the arena from the entrance, so itâs a long swim.
âMore emotional.â
âUm, yeah.â
âAnd less open to suggestion.â
âCompletely.â
âBut the jealousyâthatâs a new thing.â
âProtectiveness.â
âWhat?â
âHank is just trying to protect me.â
âOkay, protectiveness. Thatâs since you. Other women just havenât mattered that much before.â
âThatâs a backhanded compliment if Iâve ever heard one.â
âBut the point is, I think you can get him there. To the doctor. Because you matter to him.â
âI hope so.â
âMe, too.â
Geneâs phone rings. âItâs Laura.â
Fear grips Maggie, along with a little guilt. Hank doesnât need any more blows right now. Should she have gone easier on him, since she knows heâs having trouble? âTake it.â
Gene listens, frowns, paces, and finally says, âIâll get on it.â
âWell?â
âMrs. Sibley is threatening to slaughter your goats.â
Maggie barks out a laugh.
âThey got outââ
âAgain.â
âAgain. And they left pellets all over the front steps and jumped on the hood of her car and dented it. She said to tell you, and I quote, âTheyâre meat, not pets.ââ
Maggie enters the box. âHopefully we can get back before she proves it.â
After sheâs settled, Gene returns to the pens, and Maggie watches the rodeo alone, sipping a beer and dining on peanuts she buys from the beer guy roaming the stands.
