In my car, I rationalized. Of course, I’d liked it. You don’t get to be a vampire, an old master vampire, without knowing how to make someone like your touch. Besides, that was what vampires did. They seduced. They got into your head and made you want them. They used magic to make you feel great. I wasn’t immune, didn’t have some anti-vampire charm. Of course, Jean-Laurent could make my heart skip a beat. He wasn’t just magical, he was beautiful, and, thanks to Josephine’s memories, I remembered having sex with him. So sure, it made total sense that he could do that to me.

My excuses didn’t make me feel any better.

I drove home in the sunset, shook up. Finally, disgusted with myself, I pulled the matchbook I’d found in Josephine’s apartment out of my pocket. It wasn’t much but it would distract me from the too-sexy-for-my-sanity Mr. LaRue.

I dialed the number for Camilla, and when a male voice said hello, I responded without hesitation.

“I’m trying to get in touch with Camilla.”

“Club opens at ten. She’ll be here then.”

I thanked him and hung up.

Back home, after dinner, I fired up my computer. Internet classes and lots of spare time meant I was better than average at web searching. It took me twenty minutes to find mention of Klub Kaos in a blog for people into body modification. I surfed deeper, hunting on police sites and alternative listings. I stumbled on to the Klub’s page by accident, after following a link off a site for a professional who specialized in giving people spankings.

Klub Kaos was an underground club. The website consisted of a single page, white letters on a black background with a sprinkling of pictures, people in too much black leather, and an address in LA. There was no Camilla listed, but a search in reverse-411 matched the number on the matchbook to the address on the page. I used a map program for directions, but when I tried to check them against another map, I got a completely different set.

Frustrated, I called the only person I knew who knew LA. Ted answered on the fifth ring.

“Remember when you offered to take me to LA?”

“You’re willing to go?”

“Actually, I need directions. I’m trying to find Klub Kaos. It’s on Hollywood Boulevard, but that’s all I know.”

“Why don’t I drive you?”

“Because it’s work, not play, and it could get rough. I’m pretty sure the dating rules say you don’t take someone where they might get shot at.”

“Uh-huh, and what do those rules say about first dates that end up at a crime scene?”

“What’s your point?”

“That you should let me drive you.”

“Fine, but if things go south, you don’t get to blame me.”

I was glad Ted wanted to come along. I hadn’t seen him since Sunday night, and while that wasn’t all that long ago, I liked looking at him. I liked talking to him more.

The ride there took an hour. We talked about nothing and everything the whole time. We discovered similar tastes in music and opposite tastes in sports.
