NINETEEN

The two FBI agents showed up next. They singled out Aldo, his bodyguard, Nico, Gaspar, his bodyguard, Jorge, and Natalya for interrogations. Mike insisted on sitting in. So did Neville. That meant they’d be busy for a few hours.

I took Karin and Sophia aside. “I’m counting on both of you to protect Hunter and take care of him while I’m gone.”

A deep male voice behind me said, “Going somewhere, Jett?”

I turned and faced Tim. “Hunter’s hangar to ask if anyone spotted someone messing with the Bücker.”

He stared at me for a beat. “I’m coming with you.”

“Why? You think I need protecting?”

“Always.” He smiled. “We’ll take my Hummer. It’s bulletproof.”

I raised an eyebrow. “I’m never sure if you’re joking.”

Another smile. “Let’s go.”

His civilian tank was parked out front beside Odin’s fountain. The fifteen-foot bronze statue stood with his sword held high, surrounded by four fanged wolves, their open mouths spewing water toward the cardinal points of a compass. I climbed aboard the black behemoth.

As he drove down the long driveway, he glanced at me. “What are you hoping to find?”

I brought him up to speed on the suspects. “I’m hoping somebody out there will recognize one of them.”

We pulled up to the entry gate thirty minutes later. The guard looked inside the Hummer and spotted me. “Hi, Miss Jorgensen. Visiting Mr. Vann today?”

“This is my friend and security expert, Tim Goldy. We’re stopping by the hangar to search for evidence on who sabotaged Ben Foster’s biplane. It crashed last night.”

“Oh no, is Ben okay?”

“Hunter was flying it with a friend.” I gave him a few details. “Do you have a record of who passed through here the past few days?”

“Sorry, we don’t keep written records.”

The guard waved us through. My uncle’s hangar home faced the main runway at Aerodrome Estates. A full-time mechanic named Bill Hill worked in the shop at the back of Hunter’s flight school and aircraft maintenance facility.

“Let’s go ask his mechanic if he saw someone in the hangar the other day.” I led Tim to the repair shop.

Bill was bent over a workbench and stood after we walked in. “Hey, Jett, I heard about the accident. How’s Hunter doing?”

I filled him in. “Did you see any strangers here in the past couple of days?”

He rubbed his chin. “Day before yesterday, Hunter was away working an airline flight, and I was busy rebuilding an engine in the shop. We don’t lock the doors if one of us is here. As I walked through the hangar at the end of my workday, I spotted a guy with dark hair leaving. I called to him, but he didn’t stop. I rushed after him, but by the time I reached the door, he was gone.” He shrugged. “I checked the hangar—everything looked normal.”

Tim brought up a photo of Nico on his phone and showed Bill. “Did he look like this? He’s about five-ten.”

He studied the picture. “Could be him—same height and hair color, but I didn’t see his face.”

“What about this guy? Also five-ten.
