Chapter Twenty

That evening, I was alone in the office when there was a knock at the front door. I knew it was Tate. This was when I had asked him to come for the stakeout. Multigrain Market closed at eight, so we wanted to be in position before the market closed and in view of the window Edwin had told us about.

I walked to the front door and opened it.

Tate stepped inside, looking around. “Nat said you live here.”

I nodded. “I live upstairs. My office is to the right, but the main reception area and Samantha’s office, which I suppose will be yours, is to the left. I guess Nat would have already told you that when you were here before.”

He followed me into the reception room and promptly lay down and stretched out. “Wow, I can never find a couch long enough for me. This is amazing. More comfortable than any bed. Care if I stay here the rest of my life?”

I stared at him and the couch. “This is why,” I murmured.

He sat up. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Maybe in a way I have.” I pointed at him on the couch. “This is why. You are the reason why.”

He held up his hand. “Now, Piper, I will admit you are freaking me out a bit by pointing at me and saying I’m the reason why. Reason for what?”

“The couch!”

“You’re bananas.”

“No, listen. Samantha bought this couch for you. When she bought it, I was upset because it was so huge and expensive. The front door had to be removed from its hinges even to move it in the house. She did it all for you, because she knew you would fit on it. She hoped you would come here and lie on it. In a way, she thought if she bought it, it would bring you home.”

“Whoa.” He held up his hands. “You got all of that from me lying on a couch.”

I nodded.

“Oh-kaay. Maybe I could take the first shift at the stakeout.”

I didn’t care what Tate thought. I was right, and something about knowing why she had bought the couch made me miss Samantha even more. It was as if she’d always known what was going to happen and what the next step was. Had she known she was going to be killed?

Gumshoe walked into the room with his plume of a tail held high.

The cat marched right over to Tate and sniffed his legs. Tate patted the couch cushion next to him. Gumshoe lifted his nose as if considering and then jumped up on the couch next to Tate. Instead of staying on the couch cushion, he stretched his long body over Tate’s legs.

Tate held his hands in the air. “I’ve been fluffed.”

I laughed. “You were the one who invited Gumshoe to sit with you. He will always take that as sit on you.”

“I’m covered in cat hair.”

“Are you allergic?”

“No,” he said grudgingly.

I smiled. “Then you will survive, and that’s good too, because Gumshoe is the agency cat.
