CHAPTER 40
Man Down
âWhat the hell?â Donovan said again. Any of the cool composure he had had before was totally gone. Before he was ice. Now, he was as mushy as a marshmallow.
It took two more beats, and he put his hard face back on. He didnât waste any time after that. âLetâs go.â
He ducked back under the canopy of leaves above and, while it took a moment for the rest of their small group to catch up, they got the message and fell in line behind him. The sound of gunfire echoed across the field and into the tree line that absorbed some of the sharper shots. Still, it sounded like a firefight was going on out there.
A firefight didnât bode well for Lou, and they all knew it. That the shooting was still going on was a small miracle. It was one man versus an army.
They were quickly approaching the edge of the tree line that would carry them into the field, but thatâs when Jo came to her senses. She could tell that Donovan was ready to break into a full run when she reached out and grabbed his arm, yanking him back. He whipped around on her, and she saw nothing but a fierce ball of rage. She held onto his arm, but she also pulled back, ready to get hit.
Instead, he sucked down a deep breath and said, âLet go of my arm.
âYou go out there and youâre dead.â
His face shifted from anger to anguish. âLou is out there.â
âYou know heâs not going to make it.â
Mason said, âWe have to get out there. He needs us.â
Jo released Donovanâs arm then said, âI know everything in you wants to go rescue him, but you know heâs not going to make it out of there. Not on his own.â She left out wanting to say how stupid it was to go alone. It hadnât worked with Sergeant Jones, and it didnât work now.
The firefight had calmed with spaced out shots being exchanged. A voice boomed from some sort of amplified system. âPut down your weapon. Do it now!â
All the people in their little group whipped their attention in that direction. A single shot was fired, and that shot was answered by a slew of shots.
âThis is your last warning. Put down your weapon, or we will open up on you.â
The firefight had been completely out of view. The only way they knew it was going on was via audio, but that was enough to convince them it was happening.
Donovan asked, âWhere can we get a better view of the field?â
âWeâll have to backtrack and go to the west, but thereâs a rise in the hills,â Jo said. âIt might give us a view.â
âLead the way,â Donovan said. âNow.â He paused, rubbed his face with his hand, then said, âPlease. I want to know what is happening.â
âI know,â Jo said. âFollow me.â
Jo was off and running. Before the zombie apocalypse, she wasnât all that much in shape, but after it, she was almost in peak form.
