A Gator in the Hall

As I mentioned, we had several past Hoosier greats return to Bloomington to see Coach Knight and watch a practice and speak to the team in the locker room, as well as a variety of other noteworthy guests from the sports world who would make the trek to Bloomington for a visit. One memorable surprise guest that Coach Knight and our Hoosier team entertained was the Ol’ Ball Coach himself, Steve Spurrier.

At the time Spurrier was the Florida Gators head football coach, and he was in town on a recruiting trip to see Bloomington High School South’s star quarterback, Rex Grossman. Grossman was a top-25 recruit and a Parade magazine All-American, and he would be named Indiana’s Mr. Football. While Spurrier was in town, he couldn’t resist the chance to stop by and pay Coach Knight a visit and watch some of our workouts. As Coach Knight so often did with a lot of our esteemed guests, he invited Spurrier to come to the locker room after practice to meet the team and give us an opportunity to meet him. Coach loved having former players come back to speak to his current team, but he also enjoyed having other successful coaches impart some of their wisdom.
