Just a bit farther you reach a narrow ridge that is forested on one side and open on the other. As you ascend, keep an eye out for an unmarked spur trail that branches to the left and descends into Big Crow Basin. The trail along the ridgeline eventually leads you to the summit of Norse Peak, elevation 6,856 feet, and the site of an old fire lookout erected in the 1930s and removed in 1956. Not much remains of the lookout; however, if you’re feeling strong, the views are well worth the extra 1.4 miles.

If you’re not feeling the call to summit Norse Peak, the wildflowers in the bowl below are just as stunning. The trail descends the ridge through a steep, loose section that mellows as you work around the upper part of the basin. Fields of flowers, including columbine, tiger lilies, valerian, and asters, hold your interest, and in less than 1 mile you will be on the PCT.
