Daxion

One of the many downsides to being trapped in these ruins was that without a tablet or other device, it was impossible to determine the time.

I hoped we slept for a while. Amira needed the rest. At the moment, she was still fast asleep with her head on my chest, no worry held in her brow or displeasure hidden at the corners of her mouth.

This was how she should always look.

I’d do my best to make it so.

I woke her as gently as I could. As much as I would’ve liked to wait for her to wake up naturally, I feared we didn’t have that kind of time to spare. The longer it took us to get to the center of the ruins, the more time the Xathi had to catch up with us.

And the more our supplies would dwindle.

“Good morning,” she murmured without opening her eyes.

“Good morning to you,” I replied. “I hate to wake you, but we should get back to the others.”

“I wonder if they’ve noticed we’re missing.” She sat up slowly. Her bones did that horrible cracking thing that apparently human bones do.

Amira could insist it was normal all she wanted, but I had my doubts.

“I don’t think so,” I decided. “They’d be looking for us if they’d noticed. We aren’t far from camp either. So, if they were looking, they would’ve found us by now.”

“Unless they went the wrong way.” A crease appeared between her brows.

And the worry was back.

Once she was off me completely, I got to my feet. My neck and my right arm were a bit stiff after sleeping in that position all night but it was nothing I couldn’t manage. A few stretches would take care of it.

I was far more worried about Amira. She groaned when I helped her to her feet.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

“I feel like I’ve run twenty miles,” she moaned. I couldn’t resist it.

“You’re welcome.”

I received a light flick on the arm in response.

“It’s from sleeping on the floor,” she insisted with a wink.

“Whatever you say.”

When we made our way back to camp, we found that the others were already awake and packed up.

“At least we don’t have to worry about them being lost searching for us,” I murmured to Amira.

“They must’ve known we were close by,” she whispered back.

“They’re back from their little field trip!” Mariella chirped when she saw us. I didn’t know what she meant, but Amira flushed red.

Tu’ver walked over with a smug look on his face. “I trust your little excursion was pleasurable,” he emphasized the last word more than necessary. Far more than necessary.

“It was productive,” Amira said defensively. She’d started to fidget with her hands.

“Sounded like it,” Mariella teased.

“No,” Amira rolled her eyes. “I mean we found something.”

Their expressions shifted rapidly.

“What did you find?” Tu’ver asked.

“Writing, I think.”

Zan materialized at her side, clearly interested. “Take me to it,” he demanded. “Perhaps, I can identify the origins of these structures.”

“That’s exactly what I was hoping to hear.” Amira was smiling again.
