Volante Station, Orbiting Symmachia

During rec time, Eija used the zero-g room to float the gauntlet, exercising her ability to maneuver her body and objects without gravity. It was a good mental workout but also required a lot of core strength. Hair wet with sweat, she finished the fourth attempt with her best time yet.

“Now with interference and competitors,” a voice barked into the space.

Eija rotated and caught sight of Bashari, Gola, and Reef floating upward.

“You and Jadon against me and Gola,” Bashari said, his straight black hair standing up at all angles. “Ready?”

No, she wasn’t. Eija didn’t want company, let alone competition. Thankfully, she spotted Milek Aoki. “There’s your fourth,” she said. “I have—”

“He can’t,” Gola said with a snigger. “He nicked the rings, so he has to repeat the sims tonight. Figure out how to fly straighter.”

“I did it on purpose,” Milek called from where his boots were still gravved to the deck. “Tried to show nicking won’t ruin the rings.”

“Yeah, but it took a chunk out of your billion-tassol corvette,” Reef growled. “They should ground you.”

Milek snorted. “Not happening. Besides—what about Zac? She was slow enough to let a rhinnock catch up.”

“Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.” Eija shrugged.

“She’s not the one who tagged every ring,” Reef said, defending her, which was weird.

Eija saw Shad enter the room and glance up. “Ah, now there’s competition for you, Bashari, and a partner for you, Sergeant.” She scissored her legs to move away, but Reef snagged her hand.

“I already have a partner,” he said, a spark in his brown eyes. His buzz cut was tight and high, like his ego. It was bad enough he was their team leader, but why did he have to be so . . . perfect?

Eija watched her friend on the deck flee back out the door.

“Oops,” Reef teased. “Guess that leaves you and me. C’mon. Show me what you’ve got, Malika One.” He hit the buzzer, starting the clock on the course. “Go!”

The first task was to maneuver a crate into a net and secure it. With Reef being Eidolon, their team had an advantage. They anchored it, and he grinned as he punched the timer, which then released the second challenge—liquids. Red-dyed water bubbles floated into the void of the room.

Eija rotated off the wall, aiming toward the ceiling, where she detached an empty water bottle. She moved slowly and deliberately, knowing that once in motion, she wouldn’t have anything to stop her, except her partner. As long as he was close.

“The bulkhead,” Reef noted.

Eija looked up and groaned. Three droplets were spreading apart and moving toward the ceiling. She scissored her legs and swam for the two closest to the electronics panel and tilted the bottle to catch the first.

A solid thump against her back—Gola’s aggressive interference—made her miss, sending her colliding into Bashari.

He cursed—loudly. “Scuz you, Zacdari! That was a foul!”

Glaring at him, she heard the system log a penalty.

Team Two Penalty, the system droned.

Bashari cursed at Gola for the move that cost them a point.
