The Portal

D’avry decided he didn’t have time to work out the specifics of the secret door and worked the phasing spell. Again, he found the world flipped upside down beneath him and blurry as though viewed through water. He walked past the anteroom and straight ahead to the large chamber, past the stone chairs and right to the base of the raised dais and the large bowl.

Volkreek was awake now and looking not only worn out but dejected as well. D’avry realized he must have woken to find that he was alone and assumed that he’d been abandoned. D’avry felt a pang of grief for the fighter and reversed the phasing spell.

Instantly he was upright in the real world. Volkreek sprang to his feet, blade extended and emanating light that filled the room. His eyes were wide with surprise before he realized that it was the mage and softened a little. The sword remained steady though. Maybe he wondered if D’avry was a ghost as well?

“It’s okay. It’s me.”

D’avry put his hands out in a gesture suggesting he was unarmed and that he meant no harm. The sword dropped a little.

“You were out hard, so I’ve been investigating the chamber and I think I know where our friends are being taken.”

With that the man’s eyes lit up, followed by a skeptical tilt of the head and a raised eyebrow that suggested he couldn’t quite reconcile how the two statements were related. But the sword dropped a little bit more. He swiped at his upper lip with his free hand, indicating D’avry should do the same. When D’avry did he came away with flecks of dried blood from earlier when he’d been interacting with the flying eye or drone, he believed it was called.

“It’s nothing. I’m okay,” he said brushing it away and then leveled his gaze on Volkreek. “I don’t think we can catch them on foot, but we may not have to. That is, if we can figure out how this works,” D’avry said, stepping back and looking down at the bowl and then back to Volkreek.

“There is a hidden door in the anteroom behind this chamber. It has all sorts of magical protections on it to keep it hidden. I had to use the spell from the river in order to get past it and found a room with an artifact that allowed me to see places all over the world. Or at least I think that’s how it works. In any case, there is an orc outpost on the other side of the mountain.” D’avry went to point and then realized he had absolutely no sense of what direction was what this far below ground.

Volkreek’s brow furrowed as he finally lowered the sword, placing it on the ground to retain the light. He dug through his well-organized rucksack to produce a small leather cylinder about the length of his arm. Removing a plug on one end, he produced a waxed papyrus map which he laid on top of his pack.
