First Instruction

Six hours had passed.

The man who had brought such an unexpected thunderbolt into the life of Andrassy Galanov sat calmly on the floor of the filthy, deserted hallway, on guard so that his new brother could get some desperately needed sleep.

Before he left him, Galanov had said, “But I do not even know your name. I have it!” he had exclaimed the next instant. “I shall call you Der Deutsche Prophet, now that we have driven our Russian Prophet out of the land.”

The visitor shook his head. “You may simply call me ‘The German,’ if you like,” he said. “But please, nothing more.”

About the time agent Davidson was meeting with his information broker, Galanov reappeared in the corridor. The German rose and greeted him with a smile. “I hope you have slept well,” he said.

“Like a baby,” replied the Russian. “So soundly, in fact, that for a moment after I awoke it all seemed like a dream. I half expected to open this door and find no one there.”

“I told you I would not leave you for a moment.”

“As I said, there is a great deal to learn. I will explain as much to you as our time together permits. But first I need to get you something to eat.”

“I am sorry I have nothing to offer,” apologized Galanov. “It would seem that you are my guest, but I do not spend enough time here to keep food on hand.”

“Think nothing of it. Now that you are awake, I will go and buy bread or whatever I can find.”

He took several steps toward the stairs, then turned back to where the KGB agent stood watching him. “And what do you feel now, Andrassy?” he asked. “That it was a dream?”

“That can hardly be, seeing you are still here.”

“I mean what happened inside you. Is that still real, or does it seem as a dream?”

Galanov thought for a moment before responding. “That cannot be a dream either,” he said slowly, still turning everything over in his mind, “seeing that this… this… something down inside, a peculiar sensation—I don’t know how to describe it—is still with me as well.”

“A peace?” suggested the German.

“Yes, that is something like it. But of a most unusual kind. All I can say is that it makes the tears very close again to my eyes.”

“Tears of what?”

“Of… I don’t know. I cannot keep away the grief over what I have been, what I have done, yet… with it is mingled a relief that it is behind me and something new, perhaps something better, awaits. I want to weep, from both joy and sorrow at the same time. Do you know this feeling?”

“Before I answer, let me ask you another question. The new that awaits—you are eager for
