The J.D. Test

If you feel the wind blowing in a constant direction at a nearly constant speed, here’s an unscientific test that may give you a slight advantage over your friends. Don’t take this too seriously (I don’t have enough data yet), but it seems to have some validity, and it’s fun. It’s a simple way to estimate wind strength, and we call it the “J.D.” test after my youngest son, because he thought of it.

In Figure 9.6.1, Eddie, my oldest son (J.D. was not available for a photograph), is releasing grass clippings from about three feet off the ground (the length of a standard putter), and watching not only the direction they blow, but also the distance. For every putter length the grass clippings land away from the bottom of the putter, J.D. calculated the wind speed will he about 10 mph. So if the grass lands nine feet away, the wind at knee height is blowing 25 to 30 mph.
