I staked another Private Property sign for good measure—this time just at the edge of the woods, between my house and Nico’s. Then I left, the television still on inside.

Gage still hadn’t called me, but I understood he had pressing issues he was dealing with. I drove toward the station, hoping to see Caden’s car, before swinging by his house and checking in myself.

The headquarters of the Mirror Lake Police Department was a low brick building, set at an intersection on Main Street, with two walls of glass windows, and a lot full of cars mostly visible from the front. There were generally only a dozen or so people full-time on the force, in various roles, and I could probably still name the majority of them. I’d probably gone to school with half of them.

But I didn’t see Caden’s car in the lot. He usually left it here, then walked to the police boat launch across the street, beside Reflection Point. But I didn’t know his schedule. I didn’t want to risk it. I decided to grab lunch at Reflection Point across the way while I waited—there were other people in town who knew Jamie, who might’ve heard more. My brother wasn’t the only one who could find out the truth.
