At Dad’s suggestion of going to Canada, Evan found himself astonished into speechlessness. Mom had the opposite reaction.

“Canada?!” She yelped. “What, are you crazy?”

Dad turned slowly from the window and looked at her. “No. Crazy is one thing I’m not!”

Maybe not, but Evan was still shocked at the idea.

“What would we do there?” Mom asked, then pointed toward the kitchen. “I just bought all those groceries!”

Dad came over and sat in the chair beside Evan’s.

“Were you listening to anything Ambassador Wilford said?” He focused on Mom. “Things could get seriously bad in the United States.”

“You think Canada will just let us in? When our son is a suspected terrorist?” She twisted her hands in her lap.

“There’s no reason to think they’ll connect us to him. Nelson is a common last name, and we’re clear across the country.” Dad took a deep breath. “Besides, Evan made us bring our passports when we left home yesterday.”

It was true. When Zach called, things sounded so weird, Evan had told his parents to bring their travel documents. Just in case. He’d never dreamed it would come to this, though.

“Look, if the ambassador is wrong, we can come back in a couple days,” Dad continued. “Meanwhile, we’ll be away from the paparazzi, and we won’t have the FBI breathing down our necks. Intentionally or by accident.”

Maybe it was a good idea. Or not a really bad one, anyway.

“I don’t know….” Mom looked to Evan for – what was she looking for? Support? Input? Advice?

He glanced at Dad, who looked pretty determined.

“What could it hurt?” He wondered aloud. “I mean, like Dad said, if nothing comes of it, we can come back.”

“And if the ambassador is right?” Mom asked. “You think Canada will let us stay there? No. They’ll toss us out.”

“We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it,” Dad said. “I think we should pack up. We can be in Toronto in about eight hours.”

“Now? You want to leave right now?” Mom stared at him. “It’s almost dinner time. We’ll be driving in the middle of the night!”

Evan glanced at the clock over the fireplace. It was a quarter to five. Almost 2 p.m. where his brother was. Wherever he was. Had he been caught? With Katie and Timothy?

Suddenly, he felt a strong urge to leave.

“Dad’s right,” he said, rising from the chair. “I think we should get out of here. If Canada lets us in, great! If not, we can come back.”

“No, we can’t!” Mom objected. “Did you forget the gas lines? You probably won’t be able to get any gas to come home. Even if you have enough cash to buy it.”

She had a good point. There was a very real possibility that they’d get stranded somewhere. Likely in or near a city, like Pittsburg or Erie or Buffalo.

It might make a lot more sense to sit it out here, in this tiny burg. Maybe, even if Ambassador Wilford was correct, this little community could ride out the danger in relative peace and obscurity.
