Chapter 19

“Raine, I have a question for you,” Mary stated as they stood in the lunch line waiting to be served their lunch. Mary’s light brown eyes were full of glee and she was grinning from ear to ear.

“Sure, go ahead. Shoot,” Raine told her as she moved up a spot in the lunch line as it shuffled along.

“Do you like Roger?”

Raine frowned and gave her friend a puzzled look. “Of course I like him. He’s my best friend.”

“No, I mean. Do you like him like him?” Mary eagerly inquired as she picked up a dinner roll out of a bread basket and placed it on her plate.

“I’m not sure if I get what you mean?”

“I’m saying, Raine, do you like Roger as in boyfriend and girlfriend?” Mary giggled her eyes dancing excitedly.

The chatter in the lunch room was deafening and children were laughing and talking loudly over each other. Raine wasn’t sure that she heard her friend’s question right. Does she like Roger as more than friends? Um, no. Raine felt she couldn’t handle the thought of liking a boy right now especially not a boy who was her best friend.

Raine shrugged, “No, I don’t like Roger like that. He’s my best friend. He’s like the brother I never had. Why you ask me something like that?”

Mary shrugged and followed Raine over to their usual lunch table. “I was just wondering because I like him a lot. A whole lot.”

Raine glanced over at her friend who was beaming. Mary’s pretty face was becoming flushed. She looked as if someone had colored her skin with a red crayon.

“You like Roger?” Raine asked as they neared the table where Roger was sitting talking with a boy from another class.

Mary shushed Raine and whispered, “Yes, but don’t tell him I do. I wanna keep it a secret.” She winked at Raine and said, “For now.” Then she sat down next to Roger and gave him a shy smile and batted her long eyelashes.

Raine shook her head and sat down at the lunch table across from them. Mary liked Roger as more than a friend? Where in the world had that come from? The buzz from the commotion in the lunch room reminded Raine of the hum of thousands of bees swarming around a beehive in the summertime. She felt as if her world was suddenly being closed in and she didn’t know why.

During class Raine’s mind drifted off to thoughts of her stepmother and felt as if Mama Christine was in pain. It took all of Raine’s concentration to focus on her school work. She didn’t want to have visions of anyone she loved being in pain.

After school Raine was shocked to see that Edward was waiting for her outside the school building. He stood leaning up against his town car wearing a tan trench coat and a draper hat cocked to the side on his head. He was puffing on one of his cigars which Raine despised. She couldn’t stand cigar smoke.
