The airplane landed, and Algernon let go of Jane’s hand, not because he wanted to but because she seemed a bit bristly about him reaching for her. She probably allowed his hand squeezing hers in such a panicked manner because his terror was obvious. Certain the pilot would send them crashing to earth, his breathing had picked up. Perspiration lined his forehead and he had reached for her and gripped her hand as though it would stop him from falling from the sky.

Now that they had stopped moving, he waited for his heart to calm and stared out the window, as though to prove he had once again returned to the ground.

Ever since she picked him up from prison, she’d seemed cold, distant. He didn’t blame her. Who maintained respect for a man who needed rescuing from the local magistrate? Though he still couldn’t believe the audacity. Who arrests a duke? Even though Jane had explained it to him several times, he didn’t understand a system where the nobles weren’t respected, revered. Were they not of certain families, born to rule? He had always been under the impression they had a certain intelligence, gifts that rendered them superior. But now, meeting Jane, who seemed far more intelligent than most people he knew, he wasn’t sure what to think about his birthright.

He flexed his fingers. Flying scared him out of his mind, but as he had stared out over the ocean and watched it pass beneath him, he couldn’t fathom the many inventions a human was capable of. If someone could create a machine that would fly, there was no end to what more they could invent. He determined to find those minds of a particular aptitude and support their efforts. In his time.

At last they stood and filed out of the plane. Jane touched the first seat at the front of the plane with her fingers. He followed the flutters of her soft fingertips as she outlined the seat number. 1A. They passed the cockpit. He had lingered there when they boarded, the flight attendants pointing out instruments until the pilot arrived and told him to find his seat. Fascinating.

Jane walked a few steps to his front, never quite allowing him to catch up. She’d taken to wearing pants now. As much as he enjoyed the familiarity of the morning dress, he loved her in pants.

“Would you just wait a moment?”

She turned, impatience sparking out of her eyes. “Excuse me?”

“You won’t walk beside me. You won’t talk to me. Please Jane, I miss your hand on my arm.” He grinned his most charming smile, at least he thought it was charming. Woman had always responded as if it was, but Jane just turned and huffed out a breath of air.

“If you want to walk beside me, keep up. In New York, people move.”

He looked around. “Yes, and no one looks any happier because of it.”

A man tried to shove past him, but rammed into Algernon’s unmoving side. The man grunted, frowned, and then moved on.
