Chapter 12

I got home with a few minutes of my timeframe to spare. As soon as I got into the flat, I rushed to the table I’d left my phone on and switched it on: two text messages buzzed through as soon as the signal came on, and there were also two voice mails, I didn’t know which to do first, read the texts, one of which would more than likely be from Emma, the other unknown, or listen to the voicemails. I never got voicemails. I suppose half that reason was that I never turned off my phone. Still, I rarely got two calls. However, the pull of the near-guaranteed text from Emma made my mind up and I opened the texts first. The message home screen told me both were from Emma. That interested me greatly. It was a massive buzz, two messages meant that she really must be interested.

I read the texts in the order they came in, The first said:

Thanks, I hope you do too, me and Jerry are walking, then pub lunch and then liquid dessert. E x

I enjoyed reading it, savouring every word. I read it over a couple of times, imagining her walking with Jerry and Benjo, having some lovely pub-style cod and chips, maybe with some proper homemade tartar sauce. I couldn’t have dialled 150 quicker. The automated voice that answered the call just annoyed me; I’m sure they make it slower than an average person talks to clock up the cost. Finally, after pressing more buttons than I would if I’d been ringing Australia, I managed to hear the first message, it wasn’t Emma though, it was Jerry:

‘Jason, it’s Jerry. Emma has had an accident. She tripped and fell down the stairs leading to the peak of the mountain. Something spooked Benjo and he bolted, dragging Emma with him. She’s taken a pretty bad fall. She was airlifted to hospital. I’m waiting for an update from the doctors now, she’ll no doubt be kept in, though. I’ve got Benjo with me. I’ve gone through her phone and let the people know that need to know. I thought you should be on that list. I’ll ring you with an update when I have one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Jason.’

To say this was a kick in the nuts would be an understatement. I’d
