Chapter 11

“Amy Mahoney was the niece of Gerald Marsh, the show’s production manager,” Ruth said. “He’s in charge of the show’s scheduling and making sure the production runs smoothly.”

She went on to explain how one of the other posters suggested the only way Mahoney made it to the elimination rounds was because of her connections. “And then someone else chimed in, someone I’ve never heard of before. She said half the finalists for Dash for Cash had connections.”

“It doesn’t seem fair,” Lucy said.

“I agree and I need to do some more research, but until the hospital releases me, I’m dead in the water lying in this bed,” Ruth said. “While I was waiting, I’ve been mentally going over the list of suspects, the other finalists inside the maze.”

“Hang on.” Gloria held up a hand. “Let me get a notepad and pen out of my purse.” She pulled out the items and flipped the top of the small notepad. “Fire away.”

“First, there’s Desiree Warner. I think she’s a fitness instructor and if I remember correctly, a former corrections officer.”

“Got it.” Gloria scribbled the name and jotted notes next to it.

“Then there’s Lane Jorgensen. Male. From the east side of the state and I don’t know much about him. He’s young. After that, there’s Ivy Barnett. Now that I think about Ivy, she may be the online user with the name dashboard. I think Ivy has been a contestant before.”

Gloria wrote Ivy’s name with a dash next to it and then the name dashboard. “This is really going to help.”

“And, of course, Mahoney and me,” Ruth said.

“Margaret and I can hang around and one of us will drive Ruth home later,” Lucy said. “There’s no sense in all of us sitting here now that we know Ruth is going to be okay.”

“You have a point.” Gloria glanced at the clock on the wall. “If I head home now, I’ll have plenty of time to take a closer look at the list of contestants and do a little digging around.”

“That would be great,” Ruth beamed. “Maybe we can start piecing this mystery together and Detective Rat Breath will leave me alone.”

Gloria snorted. “Detective Rat Breath?”

“The detective who’s in charge of investigating Mahoney’s death. He talks like this.” Ruth began to enunciate her words, exaggerating each syllable. “He’s a greasy fellow, for lack of a better word and his breath smells like a decaying rat.”

“Gross,” Margaret wrinkled her nose. “He must have at least one redeeming quality.”

“Yeah…he didn’t arrest me.”

Gloria rolled her eyes as she leaned over the side of the bed. “I’m glad to see you’re okay. You’re not allowed to scare us like that ever again.”

“I won’t.” Ruth smiled softly. “Thanks for caring enough about me to break into my house and rescue me.”

“You’re welcome. I love you, my friend.” Once again, tears threatened, and Gloria blinked them back as she gently hugged Ruth. “Life wouldn’t be the same without you. I’ll start on the investigation as soon as I get home.”
