Chapter 14
Witch
Guilt wracked me for the things I’d done to his defenseless suits. It was one thing to destroy a mage, but those suits? I was distracted with Viney, kept throwing too hard, too fast, too on target.
“Penny, you aren’t sucking too bad,” she said with a smirk on her pixie face before she headed to her Friday night tourney.
Back in my room, I couldn’t sleep. I made a batch of lotions, but that wasn’t what I needed. I had to find something that would dissolve the glue and glitter without hurting the wool. I did some experiments, but it seemed like the only thing that worked without magic was scraping it off with butter. Drake could get butter out of wool. Probably.
I snuck out in my nightgown the black one I’d worn for a week in my bed at home. I didn’t run into any students all the way to Drake’s room. Everyone was probably at the Makiss tourney watching Witley and Viney lob hurters. I hesitated outside of his door. I shouldn’t go in. What if he was there? He’d fed me pink for dinner. I still tasted pink and pink should not equal seduction, throw in a mouse on a top hat, and yep, I was completely helpless. I sighed and picked the lock. He needed a much better locking system.
I slipped inside then hesitated while I closed the door softly behind me. Until my eyes adjusted, I wouldn’t be able to see anything. If he was here, he was probably sleeping in his bed. I should definitely leave, not creep up the stairs and to his closet like I was doing. I tripped over a vacuum cleaner and crashed into the bed. I said, ‘Lights on, please’, and the lights came on showing the glitter emblazoned bed but no mage.
I sighed and brought half a dozen suits to the bed to work in comfort. It was kind of ironic that my clothes were black while Drake’s room was pink everything and glitter. After prying off way too many pink gems, his bed felt so comfortable, and smelled like him. I mumbled, ‘lights off’ and fell asleep.
When I woke up, I wasn’t alone. I opened my eyes and saw Drake leaning on one elbow above me. His dark eyes had green specks in them and his hair was still fiery red, but otherwise it was hard to recognize him with his face coated in ashes and mud, his suit coat ripped and shredded. I leaned close and inhaled deeply. He smelled so much like black cherry, I could barely smell anything else.
“Morning,” he said voice low, his lips curling in the most delicious smile.
I brushed my fingers over his cheek and licked the ashes. “Is it? Where were you last night?”
He raised an eyebrow and his lips twitched. “Business.”
I tugged on the cuff of his suit, gritty with dirt and ashes. “What kind of business are we talking about? Landscaping or chimney sweeping?”
He brushed his fingers over my cheek and I leaned my face into his palm.
