Six

The club was technically open at four when I walked up to the same bouncer from last night and held out my ID.

“You do realize that pretty much no one comes in this early during the week, right?”

“Should you really be discouraging people from coming here?” I asked as I put the pin on the front of my shirt. “I mean, that does seem to go against what I’m sure your bosses would want.”

He grinned at me, definitely more relaxed than he had been last night. I understood without having to ask. I didn’t like being bored at work, but it was nice sometimes to have a slow start to a day.

“Thinking of joining?” he asked as he held open the door for me.

“Not exactly, but I did get a job offer.”

“Really?” He raised an eyebrow. “Server?”

It was my turn to grin. “Security. Better be careful, or I’ll have your job.”

He didn’t look threatened in the least. “I’m Ricky.”

“Nyx.” I jerked my chin toward the second set of doors. “Are the Mannings here already?”

Ricky nodded. “Inside.”

“Thanks.” He hadn’t hit on me, but the appreciative look he gave me said he probably would at some point.

If I did take Carrie up on that job offer, I’d make sure he understood my ‘no dating co-workers’ rule. My gut told me that he wouldn’t take it the wrong way, though he’d probably still flirt. I didn’t mind flirting, as long as he kept his hands to himself.

Ricky was right. The club was virtually empty, but I wasn’t the only person in the vast space. Carrie was at the bar, a couple seated to her left. A curvy redhead and a tall, lean blond man with Celtic tribal tattoos down his arms…

Shit!

That was Paxton Gorham.

Rock god, Paxton Gorham, was standing in the same room as me.

I’d come here for serious business, and now I was gawking like an idiot because a musician whose music had meant so much to me growing up was right there.

“Nyx!” Carrie smiled as she saw me. “Come on over!”

I made myself smile at her and stop staring at Paxton Gorham.

“Nyx, I’d like you to meet Leslie and Paxton Gorham, friends of Gavin and mine,” Carrie said. “Nyx is a new guest who stopped by last night. I also offered her a job, so I’m hoping her appearance here is to accept that offer.”

“Hi,” Leslie said with a smile. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Hey.” Paxton shot me a smile that I felt all the way to my toes before turning his attention back to Carrie. “We’ll try out that new equipment now.”

“Have fun.” Carrie winked at them. “Let me know how it is.”

“Oh, I’ll give you a play-by-play before we leave,” Leslie promised.

“I really don’t need to know the details!” Carrie called after them. When she turned back to me, she was laughing. “Some of my friends are far too free when it comes to discussing their sex lives.”

“I’d think owning a place like this would mean that you’re used to talking about sex.
