Chapter Seventeen

Cloak and Stagger

Aiden

“You've got McNab, what's got you?” He answers the phone.

“Hey man, is Shay with you?” I ask.

“No, she's not.” Is all he offers.

“Where is she?”

“You should ask her, it's not my place to tell.” His voice is cold and distant.

“Don't be a dick, I want to check on her and she's not answering her phone.” I don't have a lot of patience with him right now and I'm not one hundred percent convinced that he's a good guy.

“I'm actually being the exact opposite of a dick in respecting Shay's privacy. I'm sure if she wanted you to know where she is, she would have told you.”

“Where are you? There are some things I need to ask you about.”

“Marriot by the mall, eleven twenty-four.” McNab answers reluctantly.

“See you in ten?”

McNab opens the door and the first thing I see is Eli sitting on the couch. Great. “That explains why she isn't here.”

“Play nice.” McNab warns as I enter the room.

Eli rolls his eyes when he sees me and stands from the couch. “Yeah, I think I'll be leaving.”

“Good.” I say simply, sitting in the chair and putting my feet on the coffee table.

“Eli, sit.” McNab orders him.

“What?” Eli asks while sitting back down.

“We're going to clear the air and get some things straight.” McNab flashes both of us the same look.

“Like, no hitting women? Yeah I got that one.” I glare at Eli.

Eli Shakes his head, “Fuck you. What about, don't steal another dude’s girl? Read the bro code, asshole.”

“Enough.” McNab's stern voice surprises me. “You two have done nothing but make this harder on Shay. She's got enough that's happening and going on without your help complicating things.”

Eli glares back at me, “Agreed.”

“I said both of you.” McNab continues. “I realize you both think you love her—”

Eli and I both interrupt McNab's speech, professing our love for Shay.

“Shut it.” He barks. “If either of you loved her, you would stop this ridiculous fighting between you. You were, at one time, best friends. Now, look at you. You are on the verge of killing one another. I'm not sure what part of that you think is helpful to her, but it isn't.”

Eli and I remain silent, we know he's right. He continues, “So that stops now or you are both out.”

“You can't just say we're 'out'.” Eli protests. “As a matter of fact if anyone has any say in this it's me. She's carrying my baby.”

I'm compelled to my feet and I want to wrap my hands around his neck. “What? What are you talking about?”

“Shay's pregnant.” Eli has a satisfied smile on his face that I'd like to peel off with a bowie knife.

I look to McNab, praying he can say this isn't so. Her being pregnant right now would be the worst thing that ever happened. “How is she...”

“She's not.” McNab fills in. “I'm not sure what's going on, but I can tell you both with some certainty that Shay is not pregnant.” He glances as his phone.
