It turned out Marnie didn’t really know how to fly the starship. We bobbed and leveled out as she gritted her teeth, swearing under her breath.

“You said…”

“I’ve watched Taylor with it. If he could fly, I figured…” We clipped a tree near Ransom’s Ridge, and Marnie lifted the alien yoke, bringing the nose higher. “See, I’m getting used to it.”

“If you say so,” I whispered, clutching the seat’s arms for support.

We did a couple more loops of the island, and when she had the hang of the controls, she took us toward the bay.

There were two ferries docked, with the last of the population driving onto them. We found a spot large enough to support the starship’s size on the beach, and when we exited the ramp, all five soldiers aimed weapons at us.

“We’re on the same team!” I yelled.

The leader, still smoking a cigar, lowered the barrel, and the others followed suit.

I jogged through the sand, recalling the first night two years before when the UFO had hovered overhead, blasting the Coast Guard as we tried to send the handful of Spheres from Bell Island. Being here forced me to relive some of those awful moments.

Buzz and Harlow stood with Logan at the pier, and they turned to face us. “Elliot, you brought the starship?”

“The keys were there,” I said. “How did things go?”

Logan held a clipboard, and he flipped it around. “About ninety percent complied with orders.”

“And the rest?” Kim asked.

“They’ll be staying, since the ferries aren’t returning,” Harlow advised. She didn’t seem too upset about it. “Maybe we can throw them at the Outsiders first, like a shield.”

Those were my people she was so casually referring to, but I bit my tongue. I pointed at the parked starship. “We’re heading to the city. Will anyone notice if we borrow that?”

“Oh, they’ll notice, but we’ve spread word through the military networks. No one should give you a hard time.” Buzz waved at Mr. Webb as he dropped the gate, after the final car in the vicinity was loaded.

A minute later, the ferry departed from the dock and blasted the horn. They’d managed to evacuate in less than five hours.

Knowing that so many of the people I’d grown up around were now off the island made it seem hollow. The sun was high and hot in the midday, and it was impossible to avoid sweating. I listened to the trees rustling in the gentle breeze and the waves lapping in the cove.

“Do you feel that?” Harlow whispered.

“Yes. It’s the calm before the storm.” Buzz stared to the west, but the skies were clear.

“What’s the plan for today?” I asked Buzz. He’d been expecting this to take longer.

“We’re scouting locations. When these Outsiders arrive, we need to be at the most advantageous position. Then, when you return, we’ll start using the Sim-a-lons. Logan has more bodies arriving to utilize the mechs,” he said.

“We’ll be as fast as we can,” I assured him.

It took us twenty minutes to cross the water to the mainland, with Marnie taking it relatively easy.
