CHAPTER ELEVEN

Troy was struggling to remember the events of the previous two days, a seemingly constant chain of one scene of violence after another. Even with his military experience, it had rattled him, the unexpected ferocity of it, the strange setting, the visceral brutality of deaths by both the creatures and fellow humans. It was like nothing he’d ever seen before, and he’d been thrust into the center of it.

The fact that it was all taking place within the American heartland was just the tip of the iceberg, an insult to the injury his soul was suffering while watching so many men and women in uniform chewed up and spit out for what felt like no reason.

Seeing his newfound teammate Zack gunned down, the institute burned to the ground, pursuing the man he considered one of his best friends and firing at him from the turret of a military vehicle. It all felt so surreal.

Then he’d returned to FEMA village, heading back to what he perceived as a miniature sanctuary in the middle of turmoil, only to find that the creatures had become far more brazen and far more acclimated to the moderate light of late evening. They’d made their move, ripping through the men and women in the town square, and he had barely made it to a trailer in one piece, throwing himself inside and barricading the door.

Sitting inside the trailer throughout the entire restless night, he’d dozed here and there, coming closer to passing out than sleeping, and had waited until the sun was breaking through the clouds before he dared pull himself to his feet. The trailer was a narrow structure, and it only took him two steps to reach the window, where he gently parted the blades of the blinds with two fingers, peering out into the outside world, not really wanting to see what he knew he would.

His eyes widened as he looked through the blinds, not quite believing what he was seeing. Prying his fingers away, the blinds snapped closed and he walked to the front door of the trailer in a mild trance, his legs moving of their own accord, in spite of him not really wanting to venture outside.

The door opened and he stepped out into the cool, morning air, the brittle chill offset by the mild warmth of the sun shining overhead. It was unseasonably warm here in Ohio for this time of year, and the bright sun shone a vibrant glow down on the scene around him, a somewhat disturbing illumination of the carnage and violence he was witnessing. At one point in the not so recent past, the town square of Gavin, Ohio was a picturesque square of well-manicured grass, immaculately cared for vegetation, newly constructed and painted gazebos, and a playground for the children of the city to enjoy.

What lay before Troy now was nothing more or less than a slaughterhouse.

Troy had seen a lot in his lifetime, but nothing quite like this.

Bodies were strewn around the green, laying sprawled atop the hard ground, brown grass pressed flat beneath them.
