The creature stepped closer; its enormous flat-faced head focused on Beetro. It had no discernable facial features—no mouth, no eyes, nothing. It was a featureless surface, shiny with opalescent scales, completely flat. Its face was the shape of an upside-down shield—a hard, flat line for a chin, the forehead corniced by an obtuse angle forming a point.

“Don’t take another step,” Beetro said, keeping his palms trained on the creature. He tried once more to charge his body with photonic power, yet the towering gargantua trees choked the forest floor of most light.

He was defenseless.

The creature advanced, taking steady yet careful steps.

“Stop!” Beetro commanded. “Where are my companions? What did you do with them?”

The ivory-colored creature stopped, moved its enormous flat face from side to side, and then back at Beetro. Eyes the size of dinner plates appeared at the top of its face, inky black as if one entire pupil—prodigiously bulbous. A shimmer of colors flashed across the scales of its face, almost imperceptible. A vague iridescence waved across the scales, rippling randomly over the surface of its face.

Beetro lowered his hands.

The creature's eyes moved back and forth, taking in Beetro. New patterns flitted across its facial scales—intricate and complex, a cascading sequence of colors and shapes. It appeared almost as a digital screen, projecting patterns and fractals, changing from one permutation to the next.

“What… are you?” Beetro asked, dropping his guard. The gangly, shovel-faced creature was certainly strange but was becoming less threatening by the second. Noiselessly, the creature once again changed the color of the scales from interchanging reds, oranges, and blues to a solid wall of black. It was a single sheet of black scales contrasting deeply against the rest of the creature’s white body.

Suddenly, a single block of white scales emerged within the black sheet. Rather than a pattern, they were clearly pictorial:
