Seven dreaded the thought of Kira's job even as she methodically completed each task of the Overseer's duties. There was one bit of unexpected news from Garak on Terok Nor. Leeta had escaped from the mining facility. Seven knew that Kira was going to be livid when she found out, but she was glad that Leeta had managed to get away. Her reaction was irrational because Leeta should have meant nothing to her. Yet Seven was glad that someone close to First Minister Winn had survived her mission. Despite the fact that Leeta had contracted Seven to kill Kira, she seemed like an honorable person. Her motives for supporting Winn against Kira appeared to be altruistic, which was rare enough in this universe. So Seven actually smiled as she tagged the information for Kira to see.
When order had finally been restored, Seven reported to the common room.
Kira languidly rose from the sofa and gestured her toward the inner sanctum. Slaves were lying about the common room, mostly sleeping. One of the boy slaves whimpered in his sleep, while the new Terran was curled into a tense ball, watching every move Kira made. Marani was keeping an eye on him.
Seven followed Kira into the inner sanctum. Kira sealed the door behind them. “You're finished?”
“Operations are running smoothly.” Seven steeled herself.
“Good.” Kira went to the wall and let the laser light flash against her cornea. The door to the panel vault swung open, and Kira pulled out a dark blue case.
Seven instantly recognized it. The portal.
“I want you to kill B'Elanna,” Kira ordered.
Seven had prepared herself for something like this. But it was still a surprise. “B'Elanna? I don't understand. The Sitio is in the Betazed system, isn't it?”
“Yes, but this portal is Iconian. It can teleport you instantly across light-years. I forgot you only went down to Bajor to take care of Winn. When I first got it, I sent a slave all the way to Romulus.” Kira opened up the clamshell device, letting Seven see the mirror. “You could be there in seconds.”
Seven hesitated. “Are you sure it's safe?”
“Yes, now hurry,” Kira insisted.
“How do you want me to do it?” Seven asked.
“I don't care, as long as it's done.” Kira seemed impatient as she held up the portal. “We don't have much time.”
Seven felt an eagerness she tried to conceal as she glanced into the mirror. All she had to do was think about B'Elanna and she would be safe. Tain wouldn't get the portal, but she didn't care. The important thing was getting off the Siren's Song.
She concentrated on her memories of B'Elanna, sitting in her quarters with her padd in one hand and pipius tea in the other. The mirrored surface started to cloud.
Abruptly Kira closed the portal.
“What's wrong?” Seven asked, feeling a sinking inside.
“Aren't you worried about how you'll get back?” Kira asked.
Seven felt caught. Of course she hadn't considered that. Kira pressed a button on her desk and the door to the inner sanctum slid open. Two security guards were waiting with their phaser pistols drawn.
