Chapter 12 – Faeron

The dream is warm and comforting, and I don’t want it to end.

Here, there aren’t any images or sounds. It’s a formless world of peaceful, welcoming light like a nest of satisfaction and love.

And I know it’s impermanent—something too perfect to last.

But can’t it stay this way just a little while longer?

A burr somewhere at the edges of the dream adds a crack to the perfection. It wheedles into the back of my mind, vying to pull my attention back to the real world.

I resist its call and try to wrap myself deeper in the dream. But it’s too late. The warm safety of the place is already fading, and the obligations of cold reality are digging their bony fingers back into me…

The comm request comes again, this time rousing me fully awake.

Deena is still fast asleep beside me. The pattern of her deep breathing is almost enough to lull me back to unconsciousness.

I ignore my desire to drift back off and accept the comm request.

“Faeron, I need to see you in Engineering.”

To an outsider, K’vael’s voice would sound much the same as always—deep and professional with the words clipped slightly at the ends. But I can hear a thread of something else running through his words. Something like fear and powerlessness.

Or maybe that’s just what I’m feeling.

“How long until our rendezvous with the Ulrein?” I ask, trying to speak quietly as possible so as not to rob Deena of what precious little rest may be left to her.

“Just over fifteen hours.”

God, we slept for nearly eight hours. That was quite the nap.

“Okay, I will join you shortly.” I slide gingerly off the bed and grab my pants and vest from the floor.

“Very good. Trin is with me now, and I will have Deena join us as well. Uulos and I may have come up with something to give the women a chance with the Ulrein. We will fill you in when you get here.”

I have to tamp down the jolt that lifts my heart. Better to temper expectations now and not be disappointed later.

“Roger that, sir. And Deena is here with me now. I will inform her of the situation.”

“Very well.”

K’vael breaks the connection.

“What was that about?” Deena yawns.

Her pale, smooth skin seems to glow with the dim light of the room. Seeing her there, lovely and unclothed upon the bed, makes it nearly impossible not to drop the clothes in my hands and join her.

But if there’s a chance of keeping her safe from the Ulrein…

“K’vael needs us in Engineering. He and Uulos think they might have something to help you with the Ulrein.”

“Alright,” she says climbing off the bed.

Her movements are fluid and graceful like that of a skilled dancer, and I can’t take my eyes off of her.

“We should get there as quickly as possible,” she says, slipping into her clothes. “Because I want to get back here in time for us to finish what we started.”
