“That’s enough!” she shouted. “How’d you get that recording?”

“I’m always present wherever Abigail is. We’ve been together since she was a little girl, and while this copy of Harold is only a shard of the original, I still maintain the memories and directives of my family.”

There was no point picking apart the message. No one could have recorded them together all those years ago. The security that day was insane both during the ceremony and afterward at the garden party.

“I know you’re surprised, Lync. But it’s imperative that you trust me and issue the command to board the ship. We cannot risk detection. It will put too many of our plans in jeopardy.”

“Ok, open… whatever you need to open, and I’ll have my crew enter the ship.” She subvocalized a command to switch comms to her crew. “Alright folks, we don’t have much time. You should see something on that… ship near group one open. I need everyone to board as quickly as possible. Double time it if you can, and whatever you do, don’t touch anything.”

“HUA!” Groups one and two both checked in. Perhaps their line-of-sight comm was able to reach the groups once they’d touched down.

While she was still transitioning to the planetesimal, she switched to the camera view of group one’s lieutenant. A small ramp had descended from the bottom of the teardrop ship and rested on the surface of the planetesimal. As they walked up the ramp, she briefly saw the interior of the ship before the signal cut out. It was modern and streamlined, and she thought she heard her team say something about gravity before they cut out.

The video distracted her, and she barely caught her balance as she touched down hard on the planetesimal. She executed a squat and roll on impact to reduce the momentum of the landing and to handle her off balance approach. The exo-suit made a creaking sound as it compensated for most of the force. Her suits HUD was firing critical alerts. She’d come in too fast and was pushing beyond the optimal suit parameters.

She rolled up to her feet and paused, glancing up at the Petrichor. The thrusters were bright and there wasn’t any sign of the alien ship. They still had time. She exhaled and started leaping toward the ship. Her left knee complained, but she pushed the pain down. What didn’t kill her made her stronger.

The other groups had all entered up the ramp of the ship. Now that she had an obvious target, she leapt hard for it, using the suits control jets to guide and accelerate her. Before she hit the surface, she maxed the deceleration, tucked into a ball, and rolled up the incline. She’d done it many times in the simulator, but this was the first time she’d tried it in real life.

What she didn’t expect nor plan for was gravity on the other side of the ramp. She collided hard with her team. For some reason they were huddled together just past the entrance.
