No Way Home

INTERRUPTING OUR BLISSFUL moment, a missile zips past my face and into the wall behind us. Not waiting for another second, we dive to the ground, barely missing the debris falling from above. "What's going on?" I say.

The king ignores me and lifts me to my feet and drags me into a tunnel I hadn't noticed before. The tunnel is encrusted with sparkling diamonds. Almost entranced, I pause for a brief moment to admire their dazzling beauty. "Woah."

"We don't have time for this. He yanks me forward. "We are under attack."

"By who?"

"Humans," he snarls.

Thinking back to earlier times when my starship was under attack, those same missiles destroyed my starship, but I assumed it was all Dran's doing. But now, it doesn't make sense. Dran didn't use missiles. So, were those missiles intended for Dran instead?

The king halts, turning to look at me as if he has had the same thought. Recognition shadows his features like Hunter and the king are warring for center stage, so much so the glitter of his skin dulls. "Oh, my God. What if we aren't the only ones stuck in these avatars or beings? Fuck, I'm so confused about what to call them right now, KB."

My hands go to my mouth, and every muscle in my body goes rigid. Whatever is going on is beyond comprehension, but what if he's onto something? I haven't seen a mirror around, but I know my commander avatar doesn't resemble me at all. Not much of a selection for black girls in the create-a-character section. Oh no! What if other players have gone missing from their homes all over the world and are now stuck here, too? Wherever here is. What does Optima want with all of us?

Stray bullets clink against the tunnel wall, disrupting my thoughts, and the king instinctively pulls me around the corner and stands in front of me, shielding me from the approaching threat.

"What do we do?" I ask.

He puts a finger to his mouth and carefully leans his head around the corner to look. Then quickly turns back to me. "Run! There's too many of them."

I do what he says and sprint down the tunnel behind him, uncertainty rising in my chest not knowing where the tunnel will lead. The only light surrounding us is from sparkling diamonds inside the tunnel. Rounding the corner, we come to a dead end. "Shit."

"Stop right there, alien dickface."

Slowly, we both pivot on our heels, coming face to face with a team of players dressed in top-level starship suits, and a fleet of mechanized drones following them. Each member of the team has a neon triangle on their helmet. There is one member of the team whose helmet has three triangles. People on the team give this person extra points in various ways, such as extra armor, or guns because they are more likely to win for the team. This person is dubbed the team's commander throughout the game.

It sucks that my whole team has been wiped out.
