I am now convinced that theoretical physics is actually philosophy.

– Max Born

It took them more than an hour to expunge all evidence of the asteroid. Then, Kat watched as Jonas reconstructed a plausible data set as a substitute. It wasn’t hard to build a set of data that showed nothing; he’d been looking at those kinds of results for months. After he was finished, they took the bus back to his apartment–another taxi might have broken the bank. It was late when they arrived, though as he opened the door, the fading twilight was still more than enough to illuminate the reality of his bachelor lifestyle.

Jonas stood in the doorway, chagrinned. He had hoped to better orchestrate this moment; Kat’s eyes grew wide for the briefest of instants before she collected herself and smiled.

“Sorry, the maid was supposed to come today.” Jonas did his best to keep a straight face.

“I’ve seen your office, Jonas. This is your office with a kitchen. I’ve seen worse. Well, except maybe for that.”

She pointed to a spot next to the sink, where Jonas had re-created the Leaning Tower of Pisa in a canted, gravity-defying stack of dishes, rising almost a third of the way from the counter to the ceiling.

“Would you believe me if I told you it was a physics experiment?”

“Not likely. Biology experiment, maybe. But how about I go freshen up, and when I come back I’ll give you a hand with it.”

Jonas directed her to the bathroom. Fortunately, he was much more fastidious in that small space–even he had a simple bath-bot. Kat gave him an approving smile as she closed the door and disappeared.

He immediately launched himself at the pile on the counter; the last thing he wanted to do was spend the evening washing dishes. He had no illusions that he could wash them in the time she was gone–but with a modicum of creativity and the inventive use of some empty cabinet space, in short order the tower had all but vanished.

Jonas canvassed the rest of the apartment, his radar attuned to other potential distractions. As he collected the odd stray sock, empty food wrapper, and assorted other detritus, his thoughts returned to the woman tucked away in his bathroom. A month ago, she hadn’t even existed. Now, his idle thoughts consisted of little else. There had been an air of anticipation since her performance in the meeting–further heightened by their close proximity on the bus. They had barely spoken a word during the ride; the body language had been more than enough.

She emerged from the bathroom, nodding her approval as she walked through the kitchen to join him. They sat down together on his only couch.

“Wow, you may have a second career as a maid,” she said.

“Don’t count on it. And I wouldn’t open any of the kitchen cabinets. They’ve officially been declared a health hazard.”

Kat gave him a look, head tilted. Jonas found it endearing.

“Seriously, how do you manage to be both cute and disgusting at the same time?”

“It’s a rare talent,” he said.
