Chapter Twenty-Five

Fox

I’ve never written a spell in my life.

When I first started learning to use magic, successfully casting spells came pretty easy to me. I wasn’t as good as Krissa, or even Crystal, but I was decent. And as the years passed, I’ve only gotten better.

But one thing I’ve never done is create a spell from scratch.

On our trek through the forest after retrieving Jared, I talked with Sasha about how to go about crafting some magic to help Krissa, but to my surprise, it’s not something she’s ever done either. Her sister Anya always seemed to know so much about magic, even though she’s only a psychic, so I assumed learning how spells work was something they taught within the Devoted.

There’s only one person I know with a talent for creating new spells, and that’s Bridget Burke.

It’s ironic, really. Of all of us, Bridget was always the worst at casting spells. I can’t count the number of times she dissolved into tears in my basement when she couldn’t master a simple bit of magic the rest of us had no trouble with. But maybe that was her problem all along. She was trying to do something that anyone could do when she was capable of so much more.

My phone has been charged for days, but I’ve had it powered off. After my initial call to Griffin, I chickened out when the time came to call back. He knows I’m alive, which is the important part. Part of me is afraid of what he’ll say given the opportunity. I don’t think he’d be able to convince me to come home, but he might be able to convince me to let him join us—and I can’t have that. Despite the fact that I wanted him to come on this mission from the beginning, now that I’m in it, I don’t want him anywhere near it. Things are much more dangerous and complicated out here than I realized before I left Clearwater. I want my brother to stay as far away from it as possible.

Even though it’s quiet in the cabin for the moment, I take my phone outside to place the call. When it powers up, my notifications go crazy. Dozens of texts from Griffin and several missed calls. I ignore them and navigate to my contacts app. I tap on Bridget’s name before I can succumb to the temptation to listen to one of Griffin’s voicemails.

The line rings twice before connecting. “Fox, is that you?” Bridget asks by way of greeting.

A sensation of longing bubbles within me at the sound of her voice—which is completely unexpected, considering I’ve seldom thought of her as anything more than Crystal’s sidekick. But hearing her now calls to mind the countless evenings in my basement spent with the circle. Our primary purpose for being together was magic, but that didn’t keep us from joking around and having fun together. Sometimes we’d order takeout. Those were the nights when it was most likely the meetings would dissolve into anarchy.
