Somebody had scored a county map within an hour of us asking around, and I spent that time with the girls marking out the locations that the man I’d spine shot had put in his journal. There was more than I’d realized, as I’d only skimmed the material before giving it to Linda. We were going to keep this one close to the vest, real close.

“Who do we take?” Jessica asked me.

“If Sheriff Jackson doesn’t have any objections, I think it should be you, me, your mom and the IED guy, Paulson. Keep things small. We’ll have to have trucks with us, radios. We hit one location, check it for traps, steal the food, set traps of our own, and go onto the next location.”

“Four doesn’t sound like a lot though,” Jessica said softly.

“You don’t want me to go?” Emily asked.

“I’d rather… What I’m saying is—”

“You’re needed here,” Grandma cut in. “Your Mary is a sweet one, but she needs you. She worries, you know? Besides, we’re talking about grabbing food, not setting the bigger trap yet.”

“She does? But I’m fine, I’ve always been ok going with you guys before,” she finished, a look of confusion on her face.

“Poor girl has been clinging to me or Wes every time you’re not around. Neither of us mind, but she’s been having nightmares lately,” Grandma told her.

“I didn’t realize…” Emily started, letting her words trail off.

“Just this one trip. There’s going to be lots of opportunities to get the bad guys,” I told her, grinning.

“You’re right,” Emily said. “I just… When I go with you guys, I feel like I can contribute, instead of being a drag on everyone.”

“You’re not a drag on us,” Linda told her. “You’ve proven time and time again that we can rely on and trust you. It was you more than anyone else who got Wes back on his feet when we thought we were going to lose him.”

“Jessica did a lot of that,” Emily shot back, but she wasn’t snarking, more like stating fact.

“I did,” Jessica said, “but look at it like this: Wes can move silently through the woods and is almost as good or equal shot to my mom. I was military, Mom was … well, we don’t talk about that, but my Mom has got a certain skill set.”

Linda looked uncomfortable about that, and a lot of people had been wondering exactly what her experience was. It was a mystery wrapped in an enigma, to borrow a phrase.

“And we could use the IED guy, Jay Paulson, to disarm any bombs we find or set our own.”

“Do we still have those triggers grandpa made?” I asked Linda.

“We’ve got a few left, plus a dozen or so that I had some of our more bored men in the barn make,” Linda’s eyes twinkled at that. “The question is, can you make more of that generic Tannerite?”

“Yeah, but we’ll need something for shrapnel if we really want it to be nasty.”

“I got that covered too,” Linda said, grinning.
