“Of course not. Martos,” Kumari was saying. “If you had left, and I had decided to marry him, Suktio would have been a perfect father to the baby. He admires you greatly.”

Martos’ tongue was as useless as usual. Instead of speaking, he ran one finger down the soft skin of her side, bumping over ribs.

Someone pounded on the door, Martos tried to curse as he sat up, but his tongue would not do that either.

“Lord Martos!” a man’s voice shouted through the locked door. “Lord Jagat wishes you to come to the Council Chamber! At once, Lord! It is very important! Hurry!”

“I—I’m coming,” Martos stuttered, then shouted. He had to shout it twice before the knocking stopped and they heard quick feet hastening away from the door.

Angrily, he looked about for his clothes. A bare aim went around his chest; he felt soft breasts against his back. He turned his head. Their mouths met, and then she gave him a little push, and rolled away to pick her gown up from the floor.

“I’ll be waiting,” she said, “Come back if—if Uncle lets you. But—but if you don’t come—if you have to go—” Her eyes met his. “If you don’t come back—if Earth rakes you—don’t be afraid for the baby. He’ll be eared for. Or she will.” She smiled. “And remember that I love you!”

She pulled her gown over her head, hiding the start of tears,
