Only the muted lights recessed in the trees were still lit as Katherine and Danny walked along the river back to the car.

“This evening has been very special, Danny,” Katherine said softly. “Thank you.”

“That sounds like good night. No way, princess. You just hold on, you ain’t seen nothing yet.” He assisted her into the convertible from the driver’s side, slid in behind her, and swept her into his arms.

“Oh, Lord, Katherine, I’ve wanted to do this all night. Being together in public is pure hell. I didn’t know how much I missed you.” He wasn’t simply holding her, he was rocking her back and forth, threading his fingers through her hair in some kind of desperate gesture of reassurance.

She felt the tension in his grip, as though his nerves and muscles were stretched so tight they were about to snap.

“I’m so sorry,” he murmured. “Can you ever forgive me?”

Nuzzling her cheek against his chest, she began to whisper over and over again, “It’s all right, Danny. It’s all right. You didn’t do anything.”

“Yes, I did,” he said in a very quiet, very sad voice. “After all the times you stood by me, when you needed me most, I left you.”

“Yes, but you came back when you thought I needed you. Don’t you see, that makes everything all right.”

He loosened the steel grip he had on her. The tinkle of glass reminding them both that he was still holding the bag Andrew had left for them. He suddenly laughed, and she felt the stiffness ease from his body.

“Maybe,” he agreed, planting a light kiss on her lips, “but I’m not sure you ought to let me off that easy. Maybe I ought to be tarred and feathered.”

“No, I’m into other kinds of torture, Danny Dark. For now, I think I’ll just hold you to your promise. Remember, there’s still the rest of me.” She held up her hand. Her fingers were encased by the silver napkin ring.

“You stole the napkin ring?” Danny chuckled. “I’m engaged to a thief.”

“I think you set me up, all the way, big guy. Can I expect Joe to have me arrested for theft?”

“I think that Joe would give you the whole restaurant, if you wanted it,” Danny said, sliding the paper bag behind the seat and reaching into his pocket for the keys. “But me? That may be another story. I think I have to teach you to set a better example for our son.”

“Good! Do I get private lessons?”

The engine caught and Danny eased the car into reverse. At the exit he turned back to Katherine, his voice hesitant as he said, “About staking my claim to the rest of you, my emotions always outrun my head when we’re together. I’ve already gone down one wrong road, Katherine. I don’t know where this one is going, but I don’t want to make that mistake again.”

“I’m traveling with you, Danny. Maybe I’ll give the directions this time.”

“Are you sure, Katherine?”

And at that moment all doubt fell away.
